EMMITSBURG, Md. – Darren Hagan drove in a pair of runs and
Matt Day delivered with a pair of hits, but the Coppin State baseball team fell at Mount St. Mary's, 7-3, in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Straw Family Stadium. The Eagles now stand at 2-6 overall on the season.
Both of Hagan's RBI came on sacrifice flies while Day went 2-for-3 with a pair of stolen bases and a double.
Sebastien Sarabia and
Justin Oakley were the only other CSU players to record base knocks, and both also drew free passes via the walk.
On the mound,
Jordan Hamberg took the loss, allowing four runs in 3.1 innings before giving way to
Bradley Tuttle who threw 2.2 innings with one earned run.
Nico Felber gave up two runs over the final 2.0 innings.
Mount St. Mary's scored a run in the first but Hamberg settled down to hold the Mountaineers scoreless in the second and third innings. Hamberg got a groundout in the fourth before being relieved by Tuttle, but the hosts tacked on three more runs to go up, 4-0.
Coppin got on the board in the sixth on Hagan's first sacrifice fly on the day which scored
Grant Williams. Williams walked to leadoff the inning and reached third on Day's double to left center.
The Mount got that run back in its half of the sixth and it remained a 5-1 score until the eighth when the Eagles put two on the board. Day started the rally with a leadoff single before stealing second. Oakley drew a free pass and both him and Day stole another base to put two in scoring position. Hagan flew out to deep right to score Day and Oakley scored on a fielding error.
Two more Mountaineers scored in the eighth to increase the lead back to four runs and Coppin came up empty in the ninth.
