Baseball Falls in Midweek Matchup at George Washington, 9-4

ARLINGTON, Va. – Coppin State's baseball team dropped a midweek non-conference matchup at George Washington University, 9-4, on Wednesday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.  The Eagles now stand at 2-7 on the year while the Colonials improve to 5-1 overall.

Sebastien Sarabia and Matt Day reached base safely three times as Sarabia recorded a single and walked twice while Day drew three walks while scoring a pair of runs. Darren Hagan, Jordan Hamberg, Justin Oakley and Eddie Javier, Jr., all recorded base hits while Nick Morales drove in a pair of runs.

The Eagles got on the board in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead after a sacrifice fly by Morales.  Scoring on the play was Day, who led off the game with a walk and reached third after another walk and a wild pitch.

George Washington tied it up in its half of the frame, but Giovanni Canales threw a 1-2-3 second inning and forced the Colonials to leave the bases loaded in the third without allowing a run.  The Colonials scored a pair in the fourth off Canales before he was replaced by John Neeld, who induced a double play and another groundout to end the inning.

GW added another run in the fifth but Neeld tossed a 1-2-3 sixth, his final inning of relief before being replaced by Tyler Nichol.  The Colonials scored three runs, two unearned in the seventh, to take a 7-1 lead.

The Eagles rallied in the final innings, scoring a pair in the eighth on an RBI double by Oakley and an RBI single by Javier.  GW got both runs back in the bottom half and Coppin only managed one run in the ninth on an RBI by Morales.

Canales took the loss on the mound, allowing three runs in 3.0 innings while Neeld gave up just one run over his 3.0 innings of relief.  Only one of Nichol's run in his lone inning was earned while Bradley Tuttle gave up one earned run while striking out two in one inning.

Coppin travels to La Salle on Sunday, March 14 for its final non-conference game before opening MEAC play at Delaware State on March 19-21.
