BALTIMORE – Coppin State's
Miajavon Coleman led all players with nine kills and a career-high five aces to lead the Eagles to a 3-0 victory (25-16, 25-16, 25-13) over Howard Friday night at PEC arena. Coppin evens its record at 4-4 overall and improves to 3-1 in MEAC play.
A junior from San Antonio, Texas, Coleman recorded a match high 15.5 points to eclipse 1,000 points in her career. Coleman also recorded five digs along with three blocks on the night.
Chudear Tut recorded six kills without an error on 12 swings to hit .500 for the match and had a team high four blocks.
Paola Caten added five kills, three aces and a pair of blocks while
Salma Gonzalez and
Jordan Celestine chipped in with four kills apiece. Gonzalez also had four aces as the eagles served 14 aces for the match.
Kareemah Hopkins assisted on 19 of the team's 31 kills as Coppin outhit Howard .254 to .030 for the match.
Ashley Roman also led all players with nine digs.
In the opening set, Howard led, 12-11 but Coppin provoked a Bison timeout with four-straight points to take a 15-12 lead. Howard fought back to within, 18-16, but Coppin closed the set with a 7-0 run, as Coleman tallied with two aces and a kill.
Coppin opened the second set on a 7-2 run and later scored six-straight points with a kill by Coleman, a pair of aces from Caten and a kill by Tut to take a 19-7 lead and never looked back.
Howard scored the opening point of the third set, but Coppin came back with a 7-0 run which included four aces from Gonzalez. Howard's attempt to fight back from a 14-9 deficit was cut short by a 6-0 Coppin run, featuring three aces from Coleman, to give the Eagles a 20-9 advantage. Tut finished the Bison off with a kill to seal the win.
Coppin will face Delaware State on Monday, March 8 at 6 pm at PEC Arena.
