CATONSVILLE, Md. – Coppin State's volleyball team fell at UMBC, 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-21) on Sunday afternoon at UMBC Event Center. The Eagles fall to 1-4 on the year while the Retrievers were victorious in their season opener.
Miajavon Coleman led the attack with 13 kills while
Chudear Tut added nine while hitting a team-high .389.
Jordan Celestine and
Salma Gonzalez also had five kills apiece.
Ashley Roman was credited with a team-high 16 digs and had a pair of aces. Also, on the defensive end, Tut and
Sydney Hicks had three blocks each.
Kareemah Hopkins and
Sydney Sheppard split time at setter with Hopkins recording 19 assists to Sheppard's season-high ten. The Eagles hit just .168 compared to UMBC's .276.
After trading points in the opening rallies of the first set, Coppin held leads at 7-6 and 8-7 before UMBC went on a 5-0 run to take a 12-8 lead. The Eagles fought back and held a 20-19 advantage, but the Retrievers scored three-straight to go back on top and took the set on back-to-back kills.
Coppin fell behind 9-3 after 4-0 and 5-0 runs by UMBC but the Eagles once again rallied and used a 4-0 run to tie the score at 18-18. The teams traded 3-0 runs and Coppin took a 23-22 lead before the Black & Gold scored three-straight to win the second set.
UMBC got out to a 6-0 lead in the third and final set and Coppin was unable to get any closer than a two-point deficit at 22-20. The hosts then outscored Coppin, 3-1 over the final four points to seal the match.
Coppin will look to get back on the winning side of things when it hosts Morgan State on February 25-26 with both matches starting at 6 pm from PEC Arena.
