Women Hoops Continue Road Swing at Pitt

BALTIMORE – Coppin State women's basketball team will travel to Pittsburg, Pennsylvania taking on the Panthers, tomorrow, December 7 at the Petersen Events Center.

This Eagles and Panthers are 1-1 in the all-time series. The first game took place in 1996 and the last outing was in 2003 where the Eagles won 75-61.
 
Last Time Out
The Eagles are on a two-game win streak after defeating Marshall 77-69 on December 4. Jaia Alexander led all players with 24 points and seven rebounds, as she shot 58% from the field (10-17) and shot 66.7% from beyond the arch (2-of-3).   Aliyah Lawson dished in 22 points shooting, 7-10 from the free-throw line, and made three three-pointers.   Mossi Staples also scored in double digits with 14 points and team high five assists.
 
Quick Fun Facts
*Mossi Staples was named the MEAC Player of the Week on Tuesday, Nov. 30 after helping the Eagles defeat Saint Francis pouring in 14 points on 5-for-9 shooting.
 
*Jaia Alexander and Colleen Bucknor earned MEAC Weekly awards on November 16. Alexander was named the Player of the Week after averaging 24 points and 7.3 rebounds against LaSalle and William & Mary. Bucknor won Defensive Player of the Week after averaging 7.7 rebounds.

Jaia Alexander leads the team in points averaging 15.4 with 45 rebounds, followed by Aliyah Lawson (10.0) and Mossi Staples (8.3). Colleen Bucknor is tied in rebounds with 45. Staples leads the team in steals (13) followed by Lawson with six. Jalynda Salley leads the team in blocks (6).
 
Coppin Contributors
A Second Team All-MEAC selection last season, Aliyah Lawson finished second in the conference with 14.5 points per game while ranking third with 38 3-point field goals.  A native of Whitby, Ontario, Canada, Lawson also finished with 4.5 rebounds per game to go with 24 assists and 17 steals. Lawson received three MEAC Player of the Week awards, scored at least 20 points in four games and reached double figures in 12 games.
 
Lawson scored a career-high 27 points with five 3-pointers to go with a career-high 12 rebounds for her first-ever double-double against Morgan State. In her two seasons at Coppin, Lawson ranks sixth in CSU history in 3-point field goals (84) and free throw percentage (72.4%).
 
Jalynda Salley received Third Team All-MEAC and All-Defensive Team honors last season after averaging 9.3 points per game while ranking fourth in the MEAC in rebounds (8.8) and seventh in blocks (18).  A native of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Salley led the conference with 4.1 offensive rebounds per game which ranked 18th nationally.  In MEAC games, Salley averaged 10.0 points and 9.6 rebounds with a pair of double doubles.
Salley has recorded 84 career blocks which moves her to seventh in CSU history.

Returning from last season is Alexandria Hamilton, Aliyah Lawson, Hope Evans, Nailah Delinois, and Jalynda Salley.
 
New to the Nest
The Eagles welcomed in 10 student-athletes this season including: Mossi Staples transfer from Northeastern, Nadjy Tyler, Jewel Watkins, Jaia Alexander transfer from Butler, Colleen Bucknor transfer from UCF, Khya Jenkins and Cortney Gardner.
 
Scouting the Panthers
Pitt improved to 2-0 on the road with a 64-54 victory over Ball State on Saturday afternoon. It marks the first time Pitt has started 2-0 on the road since 2008-09.
Junior Amber Brown led Pitt to victory as she netted her first double-double of the season with a season-high 17 points and a career-best 14 rebounds. Taisha Exanor also came off the bench and provided Pitt with a career-high 11 points and five boards in the win.
 
Pitt currently ranks 2nd in the NCAA in total rebounds (436), 4th in offensive rebounds per game (17.4) and 5th in rebounds per game (48.4 rpg). The Panthers have posted four games with 50+ rebounds this season, the most in a season since 2009-10
