Volleyball to Host South Carolina State, N.C. Central This Weekend

BALTIMORE – Coppin State's volleyball team hosts a pair of games this weekend as it welcomes South Carolina State and N.C. Central to Ron 'Fang' Mitchell Court at PEC Arena.  Friday's game against the Bulldogs is set for 6 pm while the Battle of the Eagles will be played on Sunday at 1 pm.  Prior to Sunday's match, CSU will honor its ten seniors in a pregame ceremony.

Last Time Out
The Eagles dropped a three-set match at MEAC-leading Delaware State as Chudear Tut led Coppin with seven kills and a pair of blocks. Ashley Roman led all players with 15 digs, but CSU was outhit .218 to .000 on the day. Miajavon Coleman tallied six kills while Paola Caten finished with four.
 
Coppin Contributors
Miajavon Coleman leads the MEAC in kills/set (3.54) and total kills (248) while ranking ninth in digs/set (3.11) and is the only player in the conference to be in the top ten in both categories.  Ashley Roman is once again topping the MEAC in digs/set (4.90) and Andrea Tsvetanova is second in assists/set (8.45) and fourth in aces/set (0.43). Paola Caten ranks seventh in kills/set (2.85) and eighth in aces/set (0.38). In the middle, Ahzhi Coleman is ninth in hitting percentage (.242) and Jordan Celestine is tenth in blocks/set (0.74). Since returning to the court, Chudear Tut has put up 1.92 kills/set, and 0.77 blocks/set while hitting .393.
 
Climbing the Charts
In a sweep over Maryland Eastern Shore last week, Miajavon Coleman became CSU's all-time kills leader and cracked the Top Ten in MEAC history in the category.  Coleman now has 1,260 career kills while her 666 career digs is the seventh most in program history. She also ranks just outside the school's all-time best with 119 blocks.  Ashley Roman is second in CSU history with 1,158 career digs while putting up a school-record 4.73 digs per set in her career. m 216 career blocks are the fourth most in team history. In just one-plus seasons at Coppin, Kareemah Hopkins has 656 career assists to rank ninth while Andrea Tsvetanova's 566 assists this season places her tenth. Paola Caten has 77 career aces which is three away from matching Brianna Lang for tenth all-time for the Eagles.
 
Senior CLASS Award
Senior Miajavon Coleman was recently named one of 30 candidates for the Senior CLASS Award which recognizes excellence on and off the court.  Coleman has maintained a 3.81 GPA in Biomedical Science while minoring in both chemistry & psychology.  She is also the President of CSU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and chapter of Chi Alpha Sigma, the National Collegiate Athlete Honor Society. Coleman received a grant to perform biomedical research on campus in the Ophthalmic Research Laboratory, investigating the role of oxygen free radicals in the pathogenesis of ocular diseases. The following seniors will be recognized prior to Sunday's match: Sydney Hicks, Khala Cameron, Rebekka Hauri, Kareemah Hopkins, DeMia Goddard, Aislynn Weaver, Miajavon Coleman, Jordan Celestine and Luz Divina Nunez Sierra.
 
Scouting South Carolina State
The Bulldogs are 0-17 on the season and 0-7 in the MEAC.  Maria Vedovatto leads the team with 125 kills, followed by Gabrielle Wells with 62 and Maya McCord with 33. Vedovatto also leads the team with 14 aces and is second to Kendal Rivera (94) with 88 digs.  McCord leads SCSU with 14 blocks, followed by Vedovatto's eight.
 
On N.C. Central
N.C Central defeated Coppin in five sets back in Durham on September 26 despite 28 kills/16 digs from Paola Caten and a 24 kill, 23 dig performance by Miajavon Coleman. The teams are currently in a three-way tie for third place in the MEAC at 4-3 in league play, along with UMES. Ammaarah Williams and Arlanda Faulkner combined for 37 kills in the thriller while Lauren Janok had 48 assists, 23 digs and seven kills. McKayla Younged added eight kills, followed by Abby Vacha's seven and Celene Morris with five. Alyssa Pieh also had 15 digs for NC Central who won despite being outhit .272 to .242.
 
Up Next
Coppin will also host Norfolk State on October 29 before visiting Howard (October 31) and Maryland Eastern Shore (November 5) the following week.
