FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. – Coppin State's
DeJuan Clayton has been named the BOXTOROW National Player of the Week, it was announced by the organization on Monday morning. This is the first time that Clayton has received the award which includes all HBCU players from all collegiate levels.
A redshirt senior from Bowie, Md., Clayton averaged 21.0 points, 7.5 assists and 4.0 rebounds while shooting 53 percent from the field and 18-of-19 from the free throw line as the Eagles swept a weekend series with Norfolk State.
In Saturday's opener against the Spartans, Clayton recorded a team-high 20 points while grabbing seven rebounds and dishing six assists. Clayton also made all ten of his free throws as the Eagles were able to pull away from NSU in the second half. On Sunday, Clayton led all scorers with 22 points and matched a career-high with nine assists as he also made 8-of-9 from the stripe. In the final 71 seconds, Clayton made 5-of-6 free throws to seal the victory.
Clayton ranks second in the MEAC with 18.5 points and 6.3 assists during conference play while making a league-high 46 free throws. In six conference games, Clayton also sits third in assist/turnover ratio (2.1) and leads the league in minutes per game (38.0).

The Eagles (6-9, 5-1 MEAC), who stand alone in first place in the MEAC North, return to action on January 30-31 when they host Morgan State. Both games will start at approximately 3:00 pm, or 30 minutes following the conclusion of the women's game.
