BALTIMORE – Anthony Tarke notched a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds while
Koby Thomas added 19 points as Coppin State's men's basketball team got revenge on crosstown rival Morgan State with an 89-79 victory over the Bears on Sunday afternoon at Hill Field House. The Eagles are now 4-9 overall and lead the MEAC North with a 3-1 clip while the Bears fall to 6-4 on the year and 2-2 in league play.
Tarke continued his hot play in all aspects of the game as he made 5-of-12 from the floor and 9-of-11 from the line in addition to being credited with six assists, five steals and three blocks. Additionally, Tarke recorded his 1,000
th career point with a layup early in the second half.
Thomas was very efficient offensively, making 7-of-11 from the floor with three dunks. He also made 5-of-8 free throws and contributed on the defensive end with six rebounds and three steals.
Kyle Cardaci and
Nendah Tarke also finished in double figures with 14 and 11 points, respectively, with Cardaci, the leading 3-point shooter in the conference, burying three shots from deep.
DeJuan Clayton and
Kenan Sarvan chipped in with nine points each as Clayton also dished out eight assists with three steals.
Yuat Alok added six points and six rebounds in his second game in as many days in a CSU uniform.
Coppin outshot Morgan, 44.8% to 35.2% and held an advantage on the glass for the first time all season, outrebounding the Bears, 46-40. The Eagles also shot well from deep, making 12-of-28 (42.9%) from 3-point range, and the free throw line (25-of-32) at 78.1%.
Morgan once again had multiple players have great offensive days as Malik Miller scored 30 points and Trevor Moore had 27. The rest of the team had just 22 points.
The Eagles overcame an early 9-2 deficit but used an 11-0 run to take its first lead of the game. Coppin continued to hold on to the lead for the remainder of the half, going into the locker room with a 42-40 advantage.
For most of the second half, the score remained tight as Moore hit a 3-pointer for the Bears to tie the score at 77-77 with 2:49 left in regulation.
Clayton answered with a three of his own on the ensuing possession as
Anthony Tarke drove into the paint and kicked it out. After forcing a miss,
Anthony Tarke once again drove in deep and then fed Thomas inside for an easy dunk just a minute later, giving CSU an 82-77 lead.
After trading misses,
Nendah Tarke hit both of his free throws with 55 seconds to go which all but sealed the win for the Eagles.
CSU returns home for its next four games, starting with matchups against Norfolk State on January 23-24 at PEC Arena. Both games will tipoff at 1 pm.
