Women’s Hoops Shoots 20.3% in Loss to N.C. Central

BALTIMORE – Coppin State's women's basketball team shot just 20.3% from the field in a 58-44 loss to MEAC rival North Carolina Central on Saturday afternoon at PEC Arena.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Aliyah Lawson led Coppin State with 13 points and four assists but made just 3-of-19 from the field.  Lawson got to the line early and often and shot 7-of-8 from the stripe.
  • Chance Graham, Oluwadamilola Oloyede and Jalynda Salley each had six points with graham and Oloyede pulling down eight rebounds apiece to lead the Eagles.  Graham also had a pair of blocks and four steals.
  • E'Mya Price was credited with a career-high five steals.
  • NC Central made 38.0% of its shots and were led by Kieche White who tallied 20 points.  Paulina Afriyie added 11 points and 12 rebounds.
How it Happened
  • Coppin held a 4-3 advantage three minutes into the game after Aliyah Lawson hit a pair of free throws and fed Oluwadamilola Oloyede inside for an easy layup.
  • NC Central then scored ten-straight points before Lawson stopped the run with a runner in the lane.  Tyree Allen followed up with a layup and added a free throws late in the period to cut the deficit to 15-9 after the first quarter.
  • A three by Marley Grenway sparked in a mini-run by CSU to start the second period as Coppin pulled within two points but six-straight points by NCCU put the visitors up by eight and it took a 28-23 lead to the half as Oloyede beat the buzzer for a bucket.
  • Both teams struggled in the third but NCCU scored the first five points of the quarter and led 40-29 going into the final ten minutes.
  • Coppin came out of the break swinging, scoring six-straight to open the quarter with Lawson hitting a pair from the line and adding in a layup.  E'Mya Price then recorded a steal and went in all alone for a layup, making the score 40-35 with 8:52 remaining.
  • NCCU extended its advantage back to 44-35 before a layup by Jalynda Salley at the 7:15 mark and Salley added another lay-in off a pass from Chance Graham with 3:09 remaining to make it a seven-point game.
  • NC Central put the game away with five-straight points, all from Kieche White.
