BALTIMORE – Jalynda Salley hit a layup with 11 seconds left to give the Coppin State women's basketball team a 64-63 lead, and
Oluwadamilola Oloyede hit a pair of free throws in the final seconds, lifting the Eagles to a 66-63 MEAC victory over Maryland Eastern Shore on Monday night at PEC Arena. The win was the first for CSU (1-22, 1-10 MEAC) on the year.
Inside the Numbers
- Jalynda Salley led all players and four Coppin State players in double figures with a season-high 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting, along with seven rebounds, two assists, a pair of blocks and a steal.
- Aliyah Lawson and Chance Graham added 11 points apiece and Alexandria Hamilton finished with ten points. Graham pulled down eight rebounds and dished out four assists to match a career-high.
- E'Mya Price chipped in with seven points, a block and four steals while Oluwadamilola Oloyede grabbed 12 rebounds.
- Coppin outshot Maryland Eastern Shore, 45.8% to 34.4% and made a season-high 20-of-27 (74.1%) free throws. CSU held a 39-37 advantage on the boards.
- The Hawks stayed in the game with nine 3-pointers compared to just two for the Eagles.
How it Happened
- After being deadlocked at 12-12 after the first quarter, Coppin made 7-of-13 shots from the floor in the second quarter to take a 33-29 halftime lead.
- Jalynda Salley came up big in the second period as her and Chance Graham played a brilliant hi-low post game. Graham fed Salley for three layups during the quarter as Salley scored nine points during the period.
- Tyree Allen went coast-coast for a layup to start the second half to extend Coppin's lead to 35-29, but Maryland Eastern Shore battled back to within 35-34 with 5:25 left in the quarter before a three-point play by E'Mya Price.
- With CSU clinging to a 43-41 advantage with just over two minutes remaining in the stanza, Alexandria Hamilton made a pair of free throws, grabbed a rebound and fed Aliyah Lawson for a three, giving the Eagles its largest lead at 48-41 with 32 seconds remaining.
- UMES converted on a three-point play on the ensuing possession, but Lawson drilled a runner just before time expired to put Coppin up 50-44 going into the final quarter.
- Coppin maintained a lead for nearly all of the final quarter, but the Hawks took a 61-60 lead on a triple by Brooklyn Bailey with 1:05 to play.
- Bairesha Gill-Miles hit a free throw to extend the lead to 62-60 but Salley tied it up with a jumper with 27 seconds left.
- A CSU foul led to another free throw for the Hawks with 22 seconds to go, giving the visitors a 63-62 lead before Salley recovered a missed shot by Lawson and hit the layup with 11 seconds left in regulation, putting Coppin up 64-63.
- UMES had two opportunities to regain the lead but Oluwadamilola Oloyede got hold of a rebound and hit a pair of free throws with two ticks left to seal Coppin's first victory of the season.
