WASHINGTON, D.C. – Despite
Chance Graham leading all players with 19 points and 15 rebounds, the Coppin State women's basketball team dropped a MEAC matchup at Howard, 64-52 on Monday night at Burr Gymnasium.
Inside the Numbers
- Chance Graham scored a game-high 19 points, while making 6-of-9 free throws, to go with 15 rebounds to lead all players. Graham was credited with a pair of steals and two blocks as well. She now has nine double-doubles on the season and 41 in her career. Her 1,098 career rebounds move her into eighth place in MEAC history, passing Howard's Andrea Gardner and Karen Johnson of Delaware State.
- Aliyah Lawson was also in double figures with ten points along with four rebounds, five assists and four steals.
- Alexandria Hamilton and E'Mya Price chipped in with six points apiece as Price also had two blocks and two steals.
- Howard outshot Coppin, 37.3% to 29.5% and held a 51-39 advantage on the boards.
- Three Bison finished in double figures with Gia Thorpe leading the way with 18 points. Ayonna Williams had 13 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and three steals.
How it Happened
- Aliyah Lawson and Coppin State started out strong as they raced out to a 12-5 lead at the 3:48 mark thanks to a 10-0 run. Lawson scored the Eagles' first seven points of the game.
- With a contested layup over a pair of Bison, Chance Graham hit a layup as the first quarter expired, giving CSU its largest lead at 19-11.
- The Bison hit a pair of threes and added a jumper to tie the score at 19-19, holding Coppin scoreless in the second period until Graham hit a three with 5:35 to go, giving the Eagles back the 22-19 lead.
- Howard regained the advantage with five-straight points and outscored Coppin, 11-6 the rest of the quarter to take a 35-28 lead to the half.
- After allowing a three to open the second half, Coppin scored eight-straight which included threes from E'Mya Price and Alexandria Hamilton to cut the Bison's lead to 38-36 with 5:25 to go.
- The hosts answered right back with a three-point play and the teams played even the remainder of the quarter with Howard leading 49-44 going into the final ten minutes.
- Graham opened the fourth with a jumper but the Bison scored ten-straight points to take a 59-46 lead with 6:45 to go and never looked back.
