Softball Falls to Campbell & Charleston Southern in Day 2 of Holy City Showdown

CHARLESTON, S.C. – After falling, 11-0 to Campbell University in the opening game on Saturday, Coppin State's softball team dropped a 9-4 decision to Charleston Southern in the second day of the Holy City Showdown at College of Charleston.

How it Happened (vs. Campbell)
  • Campbell scored three runs in the first inning before Jaylene Sierra tossed a 1-2-3 second inning to keep Coppin in the game.
  • Coppin used the momentum of Sierra's frame to load the bases in the top of the third but came up empty.  
  • The Camels put two runs across against Sierra in the third before Lily Carter relieved her. Campbell plated two more runs in the frame to take a 7-0 lead.
  • Carter struck out a pair of Camels in the fourth to keep them off the board, but Campbell got a grand slam in the fifth to seal the win.

Inside the Numbers (vs. Charleston Southern)
  • Five Eagles players recorded a pair of hits on the day while Brissa Alvarado, Cloe' Ochoa and Haley Bravo also drove in runs.  Of those five, Ochoa and Sydney Dombrowski scored runs while Dombrowski also drew a walk.  Haley Bravo also had a multi-hit game.
  • Melanie Aguilera also went 1-for-3 with a run scored and a walk.
  • Alvarado got the start in the circle and allowed three runs on three hits in 3.0 innings.  Kayleigh Reome tossed the final four innings and gave up five runs on five hits.

How it Happened (vs. Charleston Southern)
  • Both teams went scoreless in the first inning but Charleston Southern managed to score a run in its half of the second.
  • Coppin tied it up at 1-1 in the bottom of the second as Cloe' Ochoa reached on an error, allowing Sydney Dombrowski to score from third after a walk and a pair of singles.
  • An error allowed the Buccaneers to score three runs in the third and they tacked on one more in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead.
  • In the bottom half of the fourth, Brissa Alvarado drove in Desiree Carrizosa from second with a single to right center and the deficit remained, 5-2 as Coppin got a 1-2-3 fifth inning.
  • Charleston Southern got a run back in the sixth before Ochoa delivered with an RBI double and Haley Bravo drove in another run in the sixth to make it a 6-4 score entering the final inning.
  • The Buccaneers scored three times in their final at bat to extend their lead to five runs and the Eagles managed just one baserunner in the seventh.

Up Next: Coppin closes its time in Charleston with a 10:00 am clash against Maine on Sunday, March 1 in the final day of the Holy City Showdown.
