Softball Drops Pair on Opening Day of College of Charleston’s Holy City Showdown

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Coppin State's softball team dropped its first two games of the season against Chattanooga and Charleston Southern on Friday at the Holy City Showdown hosted by College of Charleston.  The Eagles fell to the Mocs, 7-0, in the opener before taking a 10-2 loss against the Buccaneers.

Inside the Numbers (vs. Chattanooga)
  • Five different Eagles had one hit apiece while Cloe' Ochoa was the lone CSU player to reach base safely twice with a hit and a walk.  Brissa Alvarado, Haley Bravo, Soraya Valdez-Frick and Nia Bowe also collected base knocks.
  • Alvarado took the loss in the circle, allowing six runs on seven hits while striking out four in 3.1 innings.
  • Jaylene Sierra was impressive in relief, tossing 2.2 innings without allowing an earned run while fanning four.
How it Happened (vs. Chattanooga)
  • Both teams went scoreless in the first as Brissa Alvarado recorded the first hit of the season for Coppin but was stranded at second.  Alvarado then got out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom half with a pair of strikeouts and a groundout.
  • Soraya Valdez-Frick singled to lead off the CSU second but was unable to be driven across and Chattanooga took the lead with a run in its half.
  • The Mocs added two runs in the third and three more in the fourth.  Jaylene Sierra took over with one out and a runner on and after allowing a double to her first batter, got a strikeout and a popup to end the fourth.
  • Sierra struck out two more in the fifth and another in the sixth while giving up an unearned run.
  • Nia Bowe singled to lead off the seventh, and after a groundout, stole third but was stranded there to end the game.

  • Sydney Dombrowski then drew a walk to once again load the bases and Melanie Aguilera drove in Bowe with a groundout to short.
  • Kayleigh Reome got a 1-2-3 second inning, but the Eagles failed to provide extra insurance, leaving a pair of runners on base in the third.
