Women’s Basketball is No Match for Norfolk State

BALTIMORE – Aliyah Lawson led Coppin State's women's basketball team with 15 points and Chance Graham became the first player in school-history to record 1,000 career rebounds as the Eagles fell to Norfolk State, 85-48 on Monday night at PEC Arena.

Inside the Numbers

  • Aliyah Lawson finished with 15 points while making all six of her free throws to go with four rebounds.
  • Jalynda Salley also finished in double figures for the Eagles with 11 points along with six rebounds and three blocked shots.
  • Needing just three rebounds to reach 1,000 career rebounds, Chance Graham finished with 11 rebounds on the night along with five points.
  • Marley Grenway finished above her seasonal average with eight points on the night.
  • Led by Chanette Hicks who finished with 24 points, six rebounds, six assists and five steals, Norfolk State outshot Coppin, 50.7% to 26.2%.

How it Happened

  • Norfolk State scored the first six points of the game, but Coppin State kept it close with back-to-back buckets by Aliyah Lawson and Marley Grenway.
  • The Spartans doubled their lead to four points and closed the first period on a 11-4 run to go up, 17-8.
  • CSU stayed within striking distance early in the second until NSU began to pull away with a 15-4 run to close the period and take a 38-18 lead into the half.
  • Lawson and Oluwadamilola Oloyede scored a pair of early buckets to start the second half, cutting the deficit to 16 points but it was all Norfolk State the rest of the way as the Spartans led 57-28 after three.
  • Coppin emptied its bench in the fourth and the Eagles scored 20 points in the final period but gave up 28 points to the Spartans.
