Chance Graham Fills Up Stat Sheet as Women’s Hoops Falls to Howard

BALTIMORE – Chance Graham had a great all-around game with 20 points and 19 points while setting career-highs in assists (4), blocks (4) and steals (5) as Coppin State's women's basketball team fell to Howard, 66-54 on Monday night at PEC Arena.

Inside the Numbers
  • Chance Graham made 5-of-11 shots while making 3-of-5 3-pointers and 7-of-8 from the free throw line to record 20 points. Graham came up big in the second half but really turned it in in the fourth quarter where she tallied nine points, eight rebounds and three blocks in the final ten minutes.
  • Aliyah Lawson and Oluwadamilola Oloyede also finished in double figures with 14 points and ten points, respectively.  Lawson matched Graham's team-high four assists, along with a pair of steals.  Oloyede was a rebound shy of a double-double.
  • Alexandria Hamilton also added six points, four assists and three steals.
  • Howard narrowly outshot Coppin, 32.3% to 30.9% and held a 48-42 advantage on the boards.  The Bison turned 23 CSU turnovers into 32 points and got 21 points from their bench.
  • Coppin trailed by just a single point, 24-23 at the half, but Howard outscored the Eagles, 27-7 in the third quarter.
  • The Eagles played very well in the fourth, outscoring Howard, 24-15 while shooting 53.8% while holding Howard to 3-of-15 (20.0%) shooting in the final ten minutes.
How it Happened
  • A 24-second moment of silence preceded the opening tipoff and Coppin started off the game with a second-chance 3-pointer by Aliyah Lawson.
  • Howard tied it up with a three at the other end, and following a jumper by Marley Grenway, went on a 8-0 run to take a 12-5 lead at the 3:03 mark.
  • Following a free throw by E'Mya Price, Howard scored the final five points of the period to take a 17-6 lead after the first quarter.
  • The Bison maintained an 11-point lead and held a 21-10 at the 6:05 mark when an injury led to a 30-minute delay.
  • A Bison layup immediately followed the delay to make it a 23-10 score, but Coppin went on a 10-0 run and closed the half on a 13-1 run to trail just 24-23 at the half. Chance Graham scored seven of the team's 13 points to close the second.
  • Alexandria Hamilton hit a three off a pass from Oluwadamilola Oloyede to open the half, giving CSU its first lead since the early moments of the game, but Howard then scored 18-straight points to extend its lead to 42-26 with 3:59 remaining in the third.
  • Graham stopped the run with a jumper and with 40 seconds remaining in the frame, a scuffle took place resulting in eight technical fouls with multiple ejections.  Howard hit five free throws and led 51-30 after three quarters with Oloyede closing the period with a jumper.
  • The Eagles played a spirited fourth quarter on both sides of the ball and cut the deficit to as little as 65-54 with just under a minute to go but was unable to get any closer.
Up Next: Coppin (0-19) goes on the road for a pair of MEAC games against Delaware State (February 1) and Howard on February 3. The tipoff against the Hornets is scheduled for 4 pm and a 5:30 pm against the Bison in Washington, D.C.
