BALTIMORE – Behind a match-high 16 kills from
Miajavon Coleman and a record seven aces from
Paola Caten, the Coppin State volleyball team defeated MEAC rival Maryland Eastern Shore, 3-1 (25-15, 30-28, 19-25, 25-22) on Sunday afternoon at PEC Arena.

First Set:
- Miajavon Coleman gave Coppin the lead from the get-go, but UMES responded with three-straight points to go up, 3-1.
- CSU battled back to tie the score at 5-5, and after trading points, went on a 4-1 run to take a 13-9 lead and force a Hawks timeout.
- UMES scored the next two points to cut the deficit in half, but Coppin pulled away with a 5-0 run and take a 18-11 lead.
- A 4-0 Coppin run, with a pair of aces from Paola Caten, late in the set extended the advantage to 24-14 and the Eagles finished off the set with a kill by Coleman.
Second Set
- Coppin scored the first two points with a kill by Salma Gonzalez and an ace from Brianna Lang.
- UMES scored the next five points to force a Coppin timeout and the Eagles responded with a kill from Christa Johnson.
- The Eagles slowly cut into the deficit and after cutting the UMES lead to 18-14, went on a 7-0 run to take a 21-18 lead with another two aces from Caten.
- A 6-2 run by the Hawks gave the visitors back the lead at 24-23 to force a set point but Miajavon Coleman tied it up with a kill.
- CSU had four set points and finally closed out the frame, 30-28 with an ace from Gonzalez.
Third Set
- Coppin got out an early lead in the third the Hawks clawed their way back into it and tied the score at 8-8.
- A 5-0 Eagles run later in the frame gave UMES a 15-18 advantage and CSU got no closer than three points the remainder of the way.
Fourth Set
- The teams traded the first couple points but CSU got the early advantage with three-straight points to take a 5-2 lead.
- UMES tied the score at 6-6 but Coppin scored five-straight to double up on the Hawks, 12-6.
- The Hawks cut the deficit to 14-10 but CSU, buoyed by another two aces from Caten, used another 5-0 run to go up 19-10.
- Coppin got its first set point at 24-15, and started to clear its bench which led to a 7-0 Hawks run before an error gave the Eagles the 25-22 victory.
Inside The Numbers
- Miajavon Coleman led all players with 16 kills while hitting .159 while also recording a pair of aces and ten digs for a double-double.
- Paola Caten served up seven aces which ties a CSU record for the most aces in a four-set match.
- Sydney Hicks and Salma Gonzalez also finished in double figures in kills with 11 apiece.
- Jordan Celestine added eight kills whereas Christa Johnson chipped in with seven while hitting an impressive .545.
- Coleman, Gonzalez, Ashley Roman and Brianna Lang also had two aces each as Coppin recorded a season-high 16 for the match.
- Lang assisted on 41 of Coppin's 45 kills as the Eagles hit .288 for the match.
- Defensively, Ashley Roman led all players with 17 digs while Gonzalez and Johnson recorded three blocks each.
