Volleyball Wins First Set; Topped by SE Louisiana in Four

MOREHEAD, Ky. – Coppin State's volleyball team won the first set but then dropped three-straight as it was defeated by Southeastern Louisiana, 3-1 (23-25, 25-14, 25-18, 25-19) on Saturday morning at Johnson Arena in the final match of the Morehead State Comfort Inn-Vitational.

Series History: First Meeting
 
First Set
  • Coppin took the first set which showcased a game of runs with neither team holding more than a three-point lead.
  • The teams traded the first six points, but CSU got a kill from Lauryn Harrell to start a 3-0 run.
  • After three-straight SE Louisiana scores, the teams traded a couple of leads and a couple of ties with the last coming at 22-22.
  • A service error and a bad set the Lions gave Coppin a set point and the Eagles took the frame on a kill by Christa Johnson.
 
Second Set
  • SE Louisiana led from nearly start to finish but Coppin forced a tie at 7-7 when Miajavon Coleman recorded back-to-back kills followed by a Lions attack error.
  • After a kill by Sydney Hicks cut a Lions advantage to 10-9, SE Louisiana scored seven-straight points to pull away and take the frame, 25-14.
 
Third Set
  • Coppin held an early lead at 7-6 on a kill by Paola Caten, but it was its final lead of the set as the Lions answered with three-straight to take a 9-7 advantage.
  • Jordan Celestine recorded a kill to pull within one, but the Eagles were unable to tie it up and the Lions scored five-straight to win the set, 25-18.
 
Fourth Set
  • The Lions started the fourth with a 6-2 run as Lauryn Harrell notched a pair of kills for the Eagles.
  • Back-to-back kills from Paola Caten cut the deficit to 7-4, but CSU got no closer the rest of the way as a 5-0 Lions run eventually made it a 15-5 score.
  • With SE Louisiana holding onto a 23-14 lead, Coppin made a late charge with a 3-0 run to force a Lions timeout.
  • Miajavon Coleman notched a kill out of the break and added another following a Lions point but SE Louisiana finished the match off with a kill.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Miajavon Coleman tallied a team-high 16 kills along with three blocks and six digs, followed by Lauryn Harrell's seven kills and six by Paola Caten.  Harrell also was credited with five blocks while Caten recorded ten digs and did not commit an error on her 17 swings.
  • Christa Johnson led all players with seven blocks while Ashley Roman notched a match-high 19 digs.
  • Brianna Lang assisted on 35 of the team's 42 kills as CSU hit .096 compared to .261 for SE Louisiana.
 
Up Next: Coppin opens MEAC play at home next weekend, starting with a 7 pm clash with Delaware State on Friday, September 27.  Two days later, the Eagles host Maryland Eastern Shore at 3 pm.
