Volleyball Dropped by West Virginia & Delaware in Straight Sets

NEWARK, Del. – Coppin State's volleyball team fell in three sets to both West Virginia and Delaware in the final day of the Delaware Classic on Saturday at the Bob Carpenter Center.
 
The Basics
Final Scores: West Virginia 3, Coppin State 0 (14-25, 19-25, 16-25)
Delaware 3, Coppin State 0 (16-25, 21-25, 18-25)

First Set (vs. West Virginia)
  • The match started favorably for Coppin State who got out to a 3-1 lead with kills by Paola Caten and Jordan Celestine.
  • Three-straight points by WVU gave the Mountaineers the lead and after a couple of lead changes, West Virginia scored six-straight to open a 11-6 advantage.
  • Following a kill by Christa Johnson, the four-point deficit was the closest the Eagles got the remainder of the frame with WVU who went on an 8-3 run.
Second Set (vs. West Virginia)
  • West Virginia scored the opening point, but Coppin responded with four-straight points with a pair of kills and a block by Miajavon Coleman.
  • WVU rallied to tie and regained the lead and held a slim advantage until Coleman but the Eagles back on top with a kill, making the score, 12-11.
  • The Mountaineers scored six-straight to open a 17-12 lead, but Coleman kept CSU in it with a pair of kills during a 5-2 run, cutting the deficit to 19-17.
  • WVU finished the frame with a 6-2 run to take the set, 25-19.
Third Set (vs. West Virginia)
  • West Virginia got out to a 5-2 lead, but Coppin rallied to cut the deficit to a single point at 6-5.
  • The one-point shortage was the first of five times that Eagles got within one but failed to get over the hump for a tie or lead.
  • Coppin forced three-straight WVU errors to pull within 13-12, but the Mountaineers scored seven-straight points to put the set out of reach.
Inside the Numbers (vs. West Virginia)
  • Miajavon Coleman led all players with 12 kills but hit just .079 for the match while Sydney Hicks and Paola Caten had four kills apiece.  Caten hit an errorless .286 to lead the Eagles.
  • Ashley Roman was once again in double figures in digs with a team-high ten, followed up by Asia Stennis' seven and six by Brianna Lang.
  • Lang was credited with 11 assists, followed closely by Salma Gonzalez with eight.
  • Lauryn Harrell recorded three total blocks to lead Coppin which hit just .050 against the larger Mountaineers who hit .323.
First Set (at Delaware)
  • The hosts opened the match on a 4-1 run as the Eagles offense failed to get going early on.
  • Miajavon Coleman recorded a kill to make it a 10-5 game in favor of Delaware but the Blue Hens went on a 5-1 run to take a nine-point lead.
  • Kills by Paola Caten and Coleman stopped the bleeding and Christa Johnson stuffed the Blue Hens attack to pull within six, but Coppin got no closer the remainder of the set.
Second Set (at Delaware)
  • Sydney Hicks recorded a pair of kills as Coppin opened the frame with four-straight points and the Eagles got out to a 6-1 lead.
  • Delaware battled back to cut the score to 8-7, but the Eagles went on a 5-0 run, with Hicks tallying a pair of kills and Brianna Lang serving a pair of aces to make it a 15-10 score.
  • Four consecutive UD points quickly erased the lead and the Blue Hens took its first lead of the game at 21-20 during a 9-3 run.
  • Another Blue Hens point made it a 22-20 score and forced a CSU timeout.  The teams traded kills, but UD finished the frame 25-21.
Third Set (at Delaware)
  • Delaware led from start to finish as Coppin got to within a single point at six different times in the first half of the set.
  • With the Blue Hens leading 12-10, UD then scored four-straight to force a Coppin timeout and the Eagles responded with three-straight kills, two off the hand of Miajavon Coleman and another by Salma Gonzalez to make it a 16-13 score.
  • That was the closest CSU got the rest of the way.
Inside the Numbers (at Delaware)
  • Miajavon Coleman once again led the Eagles in kills with nine and had a season-high eight digs but hit .086 for the match.
  • Sydney Hicks had her best match of the Tournament, recording six kills with just one error to hit .278.  Jordan Celestine matched Hicks' six kills.
  • Christa Johnson recorded an errorless four kills, Salma Gonzalez added three and Paola Caten tallied two more without an error. Johnson and Caten also led the way with two blocks apiece.
  • Brianna Lang was credited with a season-high 18 assists and Ashley Roman recorded a match-high 15 digs.
  • CSU hit .151 for the match compared to .313 for the Blue Hens.
