Softball’s Season Comes to End with Loss to NC Central in MEAC Tournament

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – Coppin State's softball team's season came to an end with a 2-0 loss to North Central in the MEAC Tournament on Thursday afternoon.

The Basics
  • Final Score: Coppin State 0, North Carolina Central 2
  • Records: Coppin State (9-32), North Carolina Central (22-25)
  • Ormond Beach, Fla. (Ormond Beach Sports Complex)
How it Happened
  • Coppin was the first team to put up a serious threat as they put a pair of runners on base in the second.  Soraya Valdez-Frick led off with a single and got to third on a sac bunt by Cloe Ochoa.  Ochoa then stole second base to put two runners in scoring position with no outs but the Eagles could not capitalize.
  • Valdez-Frick also reached third base in the fourth inning after leading off with a single and getting to the other corner on a passed ball and a groundout.
  • Madison Didion faced the minimum in both the second and third innings and escaped a jam unscathed in the fourth to keep it scoreless.
  • Neither team posted much offense in the fifth, but NC Central scored a pair of runs in the sixth to take a 2-0 lead.  NCCU scored thanks to a walk and two infield singles to load the bases, and then a bloop single to left which was misplayed, allowing two runs to score.
  • CSU put up a good fight in its final at bat as Ochoa led off with a single.  Nia Bowe was hit by a pitch to put the tying run on base with one out, but once again the Eagles Navy & Gold came up empty.
Inside the Numbers
  • Soraya Valdez-Frick had half of Coppin State's hits with a pair of base knocks.  Brissa Alvarado and Cloe Ochoa also had base hits. Alvarado was also hit by a pitch, as was Nia Bowe.
  • Madison Didion allowed just one earned run on seven hits while striking out three in 6.0 innings.
  • Coppin left seven runners on base for the game.
