Auslander, Clayton Combine for 39 Points in Men’s Hoops Loss at Savannah State

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Kent Auslander scored a career-high 20 points and Dejuan Clayton added another 19 but the Coppin State men's basketball team fell at Savannah State, 71-62 in MEAC action on Saturday night at Tiger Arena.

How It Happened
First Half 
  • Savannah State set the tone early, making three's on their first four buckets and eight of their first nine to take a 26-12 lead at the halfway mark of the period.
  • The Tigers continued their three-point barrage and took a 40-17 advantage with 2:42 remaining, their largest lead of the game.
  • Coppin scored the next eight points with three-point plays by Dejuan Clayton and Kent Auslander sandwiching a pair of free throws by Taqwain Drummond.
  • SSU's Tyrell Harper scored the final basket of the period with 1:00 to go, giving Savannah a 42-25 halftime lead.
  • Savannah made 12-of-31 3-pointers (38.7%) in the half.
 Second Half 
  • Savannah opened the period with a three but the Coppin defense stymied the Tigers the remainder of the half, holding Savannah to just 28.0% shooting and just 4-of-17 from deep.
  • CSU slowly clawed its way back into the game, getting to within 67-60 with 1:01 left to play but Savannah made four free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Inside the Numbers 
  • Kent Auslander scored a career-high 20 points while making a career-high 6-of-7 three's.  He also added four rebounds, an assist and a steal.
  • Dejuan Clayton added 19 points while making 8-of-9 free throws to go with four rebounds, six assists and four steals.
  • Chad Andrews-Fulton pulled down a team-high ten rebounds.
  • After making just 8-of-48 three-pointers in Baltimore earlier in the season, Savannah made 16-of-48 from distance in their home venue.
  • Tyrell Harper had a double-double 23 points and 11 rebounds with four 3-pointers.  Six Tigers had at least two 3-pointers.
  • CSU outshot Savannah, 36.2% to 35.5% and made 18-of-22 from the stripe but the Tigers held a 44-34 advantage on the glass and also had seven second-chance points compared to none for the Eagles.

  • Coppin State will face South Carolina State in a 7:30 tipoff on Monday, February 11 from Orangeburg, S.C.
