Baseball Leads Early but Falls at Navy, 5-3

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Coppin State's baseball team led, 3-0 after three innings but were unable to hold on as Navy defeated the Eagles, 5-3, on Wednesday afternoon at Max Bishop Stadium.

How It Happened
  • Coppin put a three spot on the board in the third as Justin Banks drew a walk with the bases loaded to score Cole Gerula and Erik Crossman drove in a pair with a single up the middle. Scoring on Crossman's base knock were Corey Treyes and Nazier McIlwain.
  • Matt Urban took over starting pitcher Anthony Martinez to start the fourth and allowed a run in each inning.  Jonathan Rice replaced Urban with one out and two runners on in the fifth and fanned Navy's Matt Wilcox and then got a groundball out to end the frame.
  • The Midshipmen took a 4-3 lead with a pair of runs on three hits in the sixth and added an unearned run in the seventh to take a two-run lead.
  • The Eagles threatened in their final at bat as Derek Lohr drew a walk, and advanced to third on Ryan McWilliams' two-out pinch hit double down the left field line
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Erik Crossman, Corey Treyes and Ryan McWilliams had the only hits for Coppin who had just one hit after the third inning.  Crossman drove in two runs while Justin Banks had the other RBI for the Eagles.
  • Coppin used six pitchers on the day with Anthony Martinez tossing three scoreless innings to start the game. Branden Redfern threw one inning of relief without allowing a run.
  • Jonathan Rice took the loss for CSU, allowing two runs on three hits in 1.2 innings of work.
  • The Eagles walked ten batters on the day and were struck out 13 times.
  • Nine different Midshipmen had hits on the day while Jackson Zoch got the win, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one walk.
