Baseball Can’t Overcome Early Deficit at Savannah State

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Coppin State baseball team fell behind, 4-0 early and could not recover as the Eagles fell at Savannah State, 10-3, on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Field.

How It Happened
  • Both teams went scoreless in the first but a pair of CSU errors led to four unearned runs for Savannah State in the bottom of the second.
  • Coppin starting pitcher Branden Redfern settled down and struck out the side in the fourth.
  • The Eagles got on the board in the fifth with an RBI single by Conner Walker to score Nick Martinez from second.  Martinez has singled to lead off the inning before advancing into scoring position when Matt Day drew a walk.
  • Savannah got a leadoff walk and a single to start their half of the frame and after Redfern struck out the next batter, he was replaced by Daniel Alvarez.  The Tigers ended up with three runs in the inning to take a 7-1 lead.
  • The Tigers got three more in the sixth to extend their advantage to 10-1.
  • Anthony Martinez pitched the final 2.1 innings for the Eagles and allowed just two hits while striking out three.
  • Coppin continued to fight, getting a run each in the eighth and ninth innings.  A balk led to a run in the eighth and Martinez drove in a run with a single in the ninth.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Nick Martinez collected three hits while Derek Lohr also had a multi-hit effort for the Eagles.
  • Drew Thomas walked twice while Ryan McWilliams collected his first career hit in his first at-bat while also getting a free pass.
  • Branden Redfern took the loss despite allowing just two earned runs on 4.1 innings while striking out eight.
