SAVANNAH, Ga. – Coppin State's baseball team rallied for a pair of victories on opening day at Savannah State on Friday afternoon at Tiger Field. The Eagles took the opener, 8-7, before winning the nightcap, 10-8.

How It Happened (Game 1)
- Savannah State took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run off starting pitcher Jahmon Taylor.
- Drew Thomas tied it up in the third as he led off the inning with a home run to left field.
- Coppin put a five spot on the scoreboard in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead. Three-straight singles by Nazier McIlwain, Erik Crossman and Conner Walker loaded the bases and Carlos Alviarez drove in a pair with a single to left. Walker then scored on an error before Derek Lohr drove in two more with a single to left.
- Matt Urban relieved Taylor to start the fifth and recorded a 1-2-3 inning in his first collegiate frame on the mound.
- The Tigers rallied for six runs on seven hits in the sixth to take a 7-6 lead. Coppin's Corey Treyes relieved Urban with no outs and the bases loaded with CSU on top, 6-2.
- Coppin retook the lead in the seventh with a pair of runs to go up, 8-7.Marcos Castillo was hit by a pitch, stole second and advanced another 90 feet on McIlwain's single.Crossman then tied it up with an RBI single, and after a sac bunt by Cole Gerula, Nick Martinez recorded a go-ahead single to left in his first collegiate at bat.
- Treyes struck out the side in the seventh to receive the win, getting all three Tigers swinging.
Inside the Numbers (Game 1)
- Every Eagles starter reached base at least once as Nazier McIlwain, Erik Crossman, Conner Walker and Drew Thomas all had multi-hit games.
- Derek Lohr and Carlos Alviarez each drove in two runs while McIlwain also scored twice.
- Jahmon Taylor got the start on the mound and allowed an unearned run on two hits in four innings. He struck out four.
- Matt Urban was credited with four earned runs on four hits in 1+ innings.
- Corey Treyes earned the win, allowing an unearned run on three hits while fanning four in 2.0 innings.
- It was the first time since 1985 that Coppin won its season opener.
How It Happened (Game 2)
- Drew Thomas put Coppin ahead, 1-0 in the second with a RBI single to score Nazier McIlwain who had singled and reached second on a passed ball earlier in the frame.
- CSU got another three runs in the third as Marcos Castillo drove in Corey Treyes and Derek Lohr with a double to left.Treyes singled to lead off the third and got to third as Lohr reached on an error.
- Savannah erupted for seven runs in the fourth.The Tigers tagged starting pitcher Aaron Rea for four runs before Jonathan Rice took over on the mound with the bases loaded and one out.
- The hosts took the lead on a sacrifice fly and two more runs scored later on an error.
- The gritty Eagles responded in their very next at bat with four runs to retake an 8-7 lead.After Treyes led off with a single, Castillo was hit by a pitch and then CSU drew four-straight walks which tied the game at seven.Carlos Alviarez then singled in Erik Crossman for the final run.
- Rice struck out the side in the fifth and Coppin gave the freshman some extra insurance with two runs in the top of the sixth.An error allowed Derek Lohr to score and Crossman singled in Castillo as CSU went up, 10-7.
- Savannah got one run back in the sixth before Treyes got three outs in the seventh to earn his CSU career-record 11th save.
Inside the Numbers (Game 2)
- Corey Treyes and Carlos Alviarez each recorded two hits as Marcos Castillo, Erik Crossman and Drew Thomas drove in a pair apiece. Treyes also drew a walk.
- Castillo scored three times while Treyes, Derek Lohr and Nazier McIlwain scored twice.
- Aaron Rea allowed four runs on four hits over 3.1 innings before giving way to Jonathan Rice who earned the win in his collegiate debut. Rice allowed just one run on three hits while fanning five in 2.2 innings.
- This was the first time since 1985 that Coppin started the season at 2-0.The Eagles have never won three-straight to open a season.
Up Next: The Eagles return to face the same Tigers squad at 11 am on Saturday, February 16. They will close out the four-game series against Savannah the following day at 12 pm. Both games are scheduled for nine innings.
