Turnovers Doom Women’s Hoops at George Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Coppin State's women's basketball team committed 28 turnovers which turned into 29 Colonials points as the Eagles fell to George Washington, 54-35 on Sunday afternoon at the Charles E. Smith Center.

Inside the Numbers
  • Marley Grenway and Jalynda Salley the Eagles offensively with nine points apiece as Grenway hit a season-high three 3-pointers while Salley made 4-of-7 shots.
  • Chance Graham and Tyree Allen both added six points with Graham leading all players with ten rebounds and three steals.
  • Oluwadamilola Oloyede also had eight rebounds for Coppin who shot just 28.9% from the floor compared to 33.3% for the Colonials.
  • CSU was outrebounded just, 41-40.
How it Happened
  • Coppin got out to an early 5-0 lead on a three by Marley Grenway and a layup by Chance Graham.
  • GW cut the deificit to a single point with a pair of layups but Grenway hit another three to extend the lead back to 8-4 with 6:51 left in the first.
  • Following a Colonials three, Graham turned a steal into a layup to give CSU a 10-7 advantage at the 4:41 mark.
  • GW closed the period on a 11-0 run and continued to hold Coppin scoreless until there were 55 seconds remaining in the second quarter when Jalynda Salley converted on a three-point play.
  • Tyree Allen scored just before the half and the Buff & Blue led 32-15 at the break.
  • The Colonials opened the third period on an 8-1 run and held a 50-21 lead after three.
  • Coppin outscored GW, 14-4 in the fourth quarter, opening the period on a 6-0 run which included another three by Grenway.  The Eagles closed the gap to as little as 18 points.
Up Next: Coppin will head to the Mount Rushmore State for a pair of games, first at South Dakota State on Thursday, December 5 at 8 pm.  Two days later, the Eagles will play South Dakota on Saturday, December 7 at 2 pm.
