BALTIMORE – Chance Graham scored 32 points and pulled down 22 rebounds as the Coppin State women's basketball team routed Washington Adventist, 71-42, in exhibition play Monday night at PEC Arena. The Eagles open the 2019-20 regular season on Saturday, November 9 at Rutgers University in a 2 pm tipoff.
A senior from Upper Marlboro, Md., Graham made 10-of-26 shots from the field including one 3-pointer and also made 11-of-17 free throws. Twelve of her 22 rebounds were on the offensive side which helped CSU record 14 second-chance points compared to zero for the Shock. Graham was also credited with two assists, a block and two steals.
Coppin also got ten points from
E'Mya Price, eight from
Marley Grenway and seven points and five rebounds from
Alexandria Hamilton.
Aliyah Lawson played well as a distributor, finishing with four points, seven rebounds and nine assists while also wreaking havoc defensively with five steals. Freshman
Tyree Allen also scored five points while
Oluwadamilola Oloyede pulled down nine rebounds.
CSU struggled in the first half with shooting and turnovers, making just 25.8% of its shots and committing 12 turnovers in the first 20 minutes, but managed to take a 26-19 lead into the break.
The Eagles dominated in the third quarter, outscoring Washington Adventist, 33-12, in the period and taking a 59-31 lead into the fourth quarter. Coppin made 11-of-19 (57.9%) of its shots and four 3-pointers in the period and utilized a 22-3 run over a 6:15 stretch to pull away.
CSU also outscored Washington Adventist, 12-11, in the final quarter.
Coppin finished the game with a 34.8% field goal percentage and held the Shock to 19.3% shooting and forced 27 turnovers. CSU outrebounded WAU, 59-37, and used its size to outscore the visitors, 30-6 in the paint.
