Volleyball Heads to the Nation’s Capital for Dig the District Invitational

BALTIMORE, Md. – Coppin State volleyball will head to our Nation's Capital to play in the Dig The District Invitational, co-hosted by Georgetown and George Washington University.  The Eagles will head to Georgetown to take on Alabama A&M at 4 pm on Friday, September 14.  The following day, CSU will play the host Colonials at 3 pm.
 
What You Need to Know Coppin Contributors
  • Asia Stennis and Miajavon Coleman have been the standouts on the offensive end with 106 and 102 kills, respectively.  Stennis currently ranks 8th in the MEAC in both kills per set (2.79) and points per set (3.17) while Coleman sits tenth in the conference with a .229 hitting percentage.
  • Quarterbacking the offense is freshman Brianna Lang, who is currently fourth in the MEAC with 7.35 assists per set.
  • Coppin strung together a couple of matches last weekend which saw a major improvement in the blocking game.  Freshman Jordan Celestine and junior Christa Johnson both have 21 blocks on the year.  Lauryn Harrell has been credited with 14 blocks on the year while Coleman and Stennis have also reached double digit blocks.
  • The back row has been led by freshman Chelsie Kolibar who has averaged 2.54 digs per set.  Stennis has proved to be one of the top all-around players in the conference as she is second on the squad with 1.89 digs per set.  Marlena Guice is third on the squad just behind Stennis with 1.84 digs per set.
Scouting the Alabama A&M Lady Bulldogs
  • Despite losing seven-straight matches, Alabama A&M boasts a well-balanced attack led by the trio of Alana Cox, Jaelin Gant and Terra Brooks averaging over two kills per set apiece. 
  • Cox has also been a major factor in the blocking game, ranking second to Maya Evans (33 TB) with 29 blocks.  Evans is fourth on the squad with 63 kills as well.  
  • The back row is led by Maci Battle with 3.11 digs per set while Gant and Brooks are second and third on the team, respectively.
  • A pair of setters will see key time for the Bulldogs with Megan Evans and Preseason All-SWAC selection Meredith Sieck quarterbacking the team to a .171 hitting percentage thus far.
Scouting the George Washington Colonials
  • George Washington features Skylar Iott on the offensive end with senior middle blockers Kelsey Clark and Alexis Lete on defense.
  • Iott has averaged an impressive 3.73 kills per set so far this season while Lete and Clark have 23 and 22 blocks, respectively, to lead the Colonials.
  • The Buff & Blue is quarterbacked by setter Jaimeson Lee who is putting up nearly 9.5 assists per set and is also tied for third on the team with Jordan Young with 20 blocks.
  • The back row has held down the fort for GW as Bella Bowman has scooped up 4.58 digs per set, followed by Lee (3.70/set) and Skylar Iott (2.64).
