Eagles Overpowered By Rutgers, Defeated 3-0

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Eagles volleyball team was overmatched against the vertically-gifted Scarlet Knights, falling in consecutive sets. Rutgers jumped ahead early and often, putting Coppin State in holes that were to big to fight out of.

How It Happened
First Set
  • Through the first 12 points of the match, neither side could gain separation as each team's longest run was three.
  • Rutgers would proceed to go on another 3-0 run before Tim Walsh calls timeout for CSU.
  • Four consecutive service aces by Sahbria McLetchie helped the Scarlet Knights advantage expand to 15-8.
  • 7 aces and a .381 hitting percentage pace the Scarlet Knights on its way to a 25-11 first set blowout.
Second Set
  • Rutgers continued to keep its foot on the pedal, exploding for a 6-0 advantage out of the gate.
  • RU was relentless, closing the game with a 14-4 run courtesy of four service aces to put away another 25-11 set.
  • Rutgers finished the set hitting .417 and contributing 5 blocks while Coppin State became mistake-prone with nine attack errors and five service errors.
Third Set
  • The third set saw more of the same, as the Lady Eagles fell behind quickly 12-3 and never recovered.
  • The Scarlet Knights were boosted once again by Shabria McLetchie, who went off for six kills in the third set, guiding Rutgers to a 25-10 match sweep.
Inside the Numbers
  • Rutgers flaunted its size, racking up 10 blocks on the day.
  • Coppin State had no answer to Rutgers' serves, as the Scarlet Knights saw 14 service aces knock the Eagles down, with nine coming from McLetchie and Anastasiia Maksimova. 
  • McLetchie contributed an outstanding .593 hitting percentage, converting on 18 out of 27 attempts. 
  • CSU freshman Chelsie Kolibar and Miajavon Coleman led the Eagles in digs (6) and kills (6) respectively.
  • Christa Johnson provided a pair of kills for the Lady Eagles without committing an error on four swings
