GLEN BURNIE, Md. – Corey Treyes drove in three runs and
Branden Redfern threw a complete game on the mound to lead the Coppin State baseball team to a 15-1 MEAC victory over Maryland Eastern Shore on Thursday night at Bachman Sports Complex. The league-leading Eagles now stand at 9-15-1 overall and 8-2 in conference play.
Treyes finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored, three RBI and a pair of walks as Coppin erupted for 13 hits on the day. CSU also took advantage of seven defensive miscues by the Hawks.
Nine different Coppin players were credited with RBIs on the day as
Caleb Duhay (3-for-3) and
Derek Lohr (2-for-3) also had multi-RBI games.
Erik Crossman also had a pair of hits for the Navy & Gold.
Coppin got the party started with a run in the first on a RBI single by Duhay which scored leadoff man
Andres Santana who walked and stole second earlier in the inning. In the second inning
Allen Saar and
Nazier McIlwain both recorded RBI singles to extend the lead to 3-0.
After a scoreless third, the Eagles tacked on five runs on three hits to start the rout. Saar walked to lead off the inning and Duhay was plunked before Lohr drove in Saar with a single through the left side to prompt a pitching change.
Marcos Castillo made it a 5-0 game with a single to score Duhay and after stealing second, Treyes laced a shot to right field for a two-run single. The right fielder had the ball go right under his glove and Treyes managed to score on the play.
Redfern gave up a run in the fifth after a long break in the dugout but Coppin got that run back for him in its half of the inning on a throwing error by the catcher trying to catch Duhay at second. Santana had stolen third on the play and the error allowed him to score.
Six players drove in runs for the Eagles in the sixth as CSU tacked on another six runs on three hits to go with two UMES errors.
While the offense may get the headlines, Redfern was just as impressive on the hill. The junior from Chino Valley, Arizona allowed just one run on five hits while throwing just 84 pitches in seven innings to pick up his second win of the season.
The same two teams will play a doubleheader on Friday, April 6 at 2 pm at Bachman Sports Complex.
