BALTIMORE, Md. – Madison Didion threw a pair of complete games as the Coppin State softball team split a doubleheader with MEAC rival Hampton University on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles dropped a heartbreaker, 2-1 in the opener before taking the nightcap, 5-2.
A junior from Montsano, Wash., Didion took the loss in game one despite only allowing two runs on three hits while striking out five.
Hampton went ahead 1-0 with an RBI groundout but
Nia Bowe answered in the CSU half of the inning with a solo home run to right field, her ninth roundtripper of the season. The Pirates were able to go back on top with a run in the fifth, but the Eagles left the bases loaded in the fifth and stranded another in the seventh.
Sydney Dombrowski had half of Coppin's four hits in game one.
Didion allowed an identical two runs in the nightcap but got more run support to pick up her 12
th win of the season.
Once again, Hampton jumped out on top with an RBI groundout, but once again, CSU answered with a home run, this time by
Nicole Ullman, who now has a pair on the year.
The Pirates recorded an RBI single in the third to take a 2-1 lead but the Navy & Gold responded with three runs to go up, 4-2.
Megan Brogden led off the rally with a single and got into scoring position on a sac but by
Megan Narvaez. A single by
Patricia Soria followed by a walk by Bowe loaded the bases for
Cayla Brown who was plunked to tie the score. Ullman then singled in Soria and Dombrowski drove in Bowe with a sacrifice fly to cap off the scoring.
Didion was able to escape a couple of jams in the middle innings before Narvaez gave her some extra insurance with an RBI single in the sixth. Scoring on the play was
Camille Ochoa who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning before advancing to third on an error.
Coppin was able to close out the game as Didion fanned the first two batters of the seventh before retiring the side on a foul out.
On Deck: The two teams will complete the three-game series with a pivotal 12 pm first pitch on Sunday, April 22 at Coppin State Softball Field.
