TOWSON, Md. – The Coppin State University baseball team fell at crosstown rival Towson University, 9-4, on Wednesday afternoon at Schuerholz Park. The Eagles fall to 11-16-1 while the Tigers move to 9-22 on the season.
Brett Helmbrecht led Coppin going a perfect 4-for-4 with a run scored while
Carlos Alviarez also had a multi-hit day while also scoring a run, driving in another drawing a walk.
Nazier McIlwain drove in a pair of runs while walking twice.
Coppin led on a pair of occasions during the midweek set, taking a 1-0 lead after the top of the third. With one out, Alviarez singled to left and stole second base. A groundout by McIlwain advanced him to third and he scored on a wild pitch.
Towson answered with three runs in its half of the inning off starting pitcher
Quinn Gleed but the Eagles fought back with three runs in the top of the fourth.
Corey Treyes and Helmbrecht led off with two-straight singles and after a fielder's choice,
Andres Santana singled to load the bases. Alviarez then drew a walk to score a run and McIlwain lined a shot up the middle to score
Brandon Watkins and Santana, giving CSU a 4-3 lead.
Gleed pitched a scoreless fourth, his last inning of the afternoon before giving way to
Bradley Tuttle. The Tigers retook the lead with a pair of runs in the fifth and added four more in the sixth to take a 9-4 lead.
Delvin McFadden pitched the final two innings for the Eagles, retiring the side in order in both on just 19 pitches.
Coppin put a pair of runners on in the seventh and another in the ninth but was unable to get any closer.
On Deck: CSU returns to action on April 14-15 for a three-game MEAC series at Delaware State. Saturday's doubleheader is slated for 12 pm followed by a 12 o'clock start the following afternoon.
