BALTIMORE, Md. – Pitcher
Madison Didion picked up her third win of the series as the Coppin State softball team completed a three-game sweep of MEAC rival Maryland Eastern Shore with a 3-1 victory on Wednesday afternoon. The win moves the Eagles to 8-10 overall and 5-1 in conference play which ties them for first place in the Northern Division.
A junior from Montesano, Washington, Didion allowed just one run on four hits while striking out nine. For the series, Didion went 3-0, allowing just two earned runs in 18.2 innings of work for a 0.75 earned run average while striking out 22.
Both teams failed to score through the first three innings but Coppin was able to get on the board with a pair of runs in the fourth.
Megan Brogden started the inning with a walk and was pinch ran for by
Hatika James.
Nicole Ullman then reached on an error on a sac bunt attempt which allowed James to advance to third. Ullman then stole second just prior to an RBI groundout by
Sydney Dombrowski and a sacrifice fly by
Haley Bravo.
Didion pitched a 1-2-3 fifth inning with a pair of strikeouts but Maryland Eastern Shore was able to get on the board with a run in the sixth.
Camille Ochoa helped get the run back in the Eagles half of the frame with an RBI single which scored pinch runner
Kyra Nelson from second. Nelson replaced Ullman who led off with a single to center field.
Eastern Shore went down in order in the seventh as Coppin sealed the victory and earned its first sweep of their MEAC rival since 2015.
Nia Bowe also recorded pair of hits on the day to lead the Eagles.
On Deck: Coppin will make the short trip to Delaware State for a three-game series on March 30-31. Friday's single game is slated for 3 pm followed by a 12 pm doubleheader on Saturday. The Hornets and Eagles are currently tied for first place with a 5-1 record in the MEAC.
