DOVER, Del. – Coppin State's softball team earned its first victory over Delaware State since 2012 with a 4-3 win in the second a three-game series on Saturday afternoon at the Hornets Nest. Delaware State won the opener, 6-5, to open the day as the series opener on Friday was resumed while game three went in the Hornets' favor, 11-3.
The win in game two was Coppin's first over the Hornets since April 15, 2012 when the Eagles won, 2-1 at the Hornets Nest. In the 2012 season, CSU went 13-5 in conference play with a 20-22 overall record.
Friday's game started back up on Saturday in the bottom of the sixth inning with the teams deadlocked at three. Delaware State was quick with the bat and scored three runs on four hits.
The Eagles rallied in their final at bat, getting four-straight singles to cut the deficit to 6-5, but Delaware State retired three-straight to get the win.
Megan Narvaez and
Patricia Soria each recorded three hits on the opener and five different CSU players were credited with RBIs.
In another low scoring affair in game two,
Madison Didion once again threw a complete game and allowed just three runs on eight hits.
Cayla Brown put Coppin on top with an RBI single in the first to score
Nia Bowe who responded with a 3-for-4 effort in the win.
Delaware State tied it up with a run in their half of the frame but the Eagles took the lead back on a two-run double by Soria. Scoring on the play was pinch runner
Kylie Flagler and
Hatika James.
Bowe, who was playing just minutes from her hometown of Milford, Del., gave Coppin a much needed insurance run in the fifth with an RBI double in the fifth to drive in Soria.
The Hornets did not go away easily as they cut into the lead with a pair of runs in the sixth but Didion struck out the final batter to kill the rally and got through the seventh to pick up the win.
Coppin held an early lead in the final game of the series as Brown recorded an RBI groundout to score Narvaez, but the Hornets responded for three runs over the first two innings.
A single by
Megan Brogden in the fourth and a sacrifice fly by Bowe in the fifth drove in runs for the Eagles, but with DSU leading 6-3 after five, the Hornets erupted for five runs in the sixth to get the win.
The Eagles (9-12) return to action on Thursday, April 5 for a non-conference doubleheader at Rider at 2 pm.
