ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Coppin State baseball team's four-game winning streak came to an end with an 11-3 loss at Navy on Wednesday afternoon.
The Midshipmen tacked on eight runs in the first four innings and another in the sixth until a solo home run by
Nazier McIlwain in the seventh inning put the Eagles on the board. The roundtripper was the first of the season for McIlwain who had two of Coppin's six hits on the day.
Navy got the run back and added another in its half of the inning, and both teams went scoreless in the eighth before the Eagles' final at bat in the ninth amounted for two runs.
Palmer Powis started the rally by reaching on a passed ball and advanced to second on
Allen Saar's pinch hit single.
Corey Treyes ran for Powis and got to third on
Carlos Alviarez' fielder's choice before a wild pitch scored him.
Brandon Watkins then came through with his first career base hit which plated Alviarez but that was as close as the Eagles would get.
Daniel Alvarez took the loss for Coppin as he allowed four earned runs in 3.2 innings of work.
Quinn Gleed finished the fourth and pitched a scoreless fifth before giving way to
Bradley Tuttle who gave up two earned runs in two innings.
Anthony Martinez pitched a perfect eighth innings for the Navy & Gold.
On Deck: Tied for first place with Norfolk State in the MEAC North at 5-1, CSU will travel to take on the Spartans in a three-game series on March 30-31. A single game will be played on Friday at 3 pm followed by a 12 pm doubleheader on Saturday.
