BALTIMORE, Md. – Nia Bowe hit a pair of home runs in game one and
Madison Didion earned a pair of victories in the circle as Coppin State's softball team swept a MEAC doubleheader with Maryland Eastern Shore on Tuesday afternoon at Coppin Softball Field. The Eagles, who won the opener, 6-1 and the nightcap, 12-7, now stand at 7-10 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
A freshman from Milford, Del., Bowe went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a walk in game one and followed up with 1-for-3 effort in the nightcap while drawing another walk. Her two home runs in the opener was the second time this season she hit two homers in the same game and she now has a team-high five on the year.
Didion was dominant on the rubber in game one, striking out a career-high 12 batters while allowing an unearned run on just three hits. In game two, Didion relieved
Cloe' Ochoa and gave up just one run on six hits in 4.2 innings of work to pick up her seventh win of the year.
In the opener, Bowe was not the only productive Eagle offensively as
Cayla Brown and
Megan Brogden had three hits apiece just behind her in the lineup.
Brown put Coppin on top with an RBI single in the first to score
Patricia Soria who walked and stole second earlier in the inning. Soria was also on base for Bowe's first longball of the game in the third and
Nicole Ullman drove Brown later in the inning with an RBI single to put the Eagles up, 4-0.
Bowe led off the fifth inning with a solo shot to left center and Soria once again scored in the sixth inning on a wild pitch.
When not throwing balls past UMES from her spot in the circle, Didion was also very efficient, throwing just 88 pitches in the opener. Didion fanned two in the first, three in the second, three in the fourth and two in the seventh to seal the victory.
Ochoa got through the first two innings unscathed in the circle for Coppin in game two and the Eagles then erupted for eight runs in the second inning, sending 14 batters to the plate. Brogden led off the frame with a double and scored on Ullman's bunt single, one of three hits for Ullman in the nightcap.
Ullman advanced to second on the play and then third on a wild pitch. A walk was issued to
Sydney Dombrowski to put runners on the corners before
Haley Bravo lined a single to right field which scored Ullman. Following a wild pitch,
Camille Ochoa hit a two-run single to put the Eagles up 4-0.
Two-straight walks to
Megan Narvaez and Bowe loaded the bases before Brown's RBI single and Brogden drove in another with a ground out. Bowe later scored on another wild pitch and Ullman rounded out the scoring with an RBI single to score Brown.
Maryland Eastern Shore was able to tag Ochoa for seven runs in the third before Didion replaced her and retired the final two batters of the inning.
Bravo drove in two more runs in the fourth on a single which plated Brogden and Ullman. Coppin added two more in the sixth on a wild pitch as well as an RBI single by Dombrowski.
On Deck: Coppin will look to sweep the three-game series with the Hawks on Wednesday, March 28. First pitch is scheduled for 1 pm.
