NORFOLK, Va. – Behind
Patricia Soria's three RBI, and another impressive pitching performance from
Madison Didion, the Coppin State softball team defeated Norfolk State, 6-1 on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles won two of the three games against the Spartans and now stand at 5-10 overall with a 2-1 mark in the MEAC.
Coppin got a run in the first and that was nearly all that Didion would need for the rest of the game in the circle. Back-to-back singles by
Cloe' Ochoa and
Nia Bowe put two runners on before
Cayla Brown, who was celebrating her birthday, singled in Ochoa with a base knock through the right side.
The score remained a one-run game until the Eagles scored three runs in the fourth on two hits while also capitalizing on three Spartans errors. A leadoff double by
Megan Narvaez prompted a pitching change, and after a walk a groundout put two runners in scoring position.
Nicole Ullman then hit a shot to left center which was dropped, allowing Narvaez to score from third. With two outs, Soria then doubled to straight-away center field to score both
Sydney Dombrowski and Ullman.
Soria drove in another run in the sixth and Coppin added another in the frame following a throwing error by the pitcher to make it a 6-0 game.
Norfolk was finally able to get on the board in the seventh with the help of two Coppin errors as the run went unearned.
Didion improved to 5-2 on the year, allowing an unearned run on six hits while striking out seven in the complete game victory.
The Eagles travel to Mount St. Mary's for a non-conference twinbil on Tuesday, March 20 at 3 pm.
