EMMITSBURG, Md. – Coppin State's baseball game at Mount St. Mary's was suspended in the seventh inning and resulted in a 4-4 tie on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles trailed 4-1 going into their half of the seventh and forced the tie score with three runs in the frame.
Drew Thomas put Coppin on the board first with a solo home run in the top of the second inning but the Mount tied the score with a run in the third, another in the fifth and two in the sixth to take a 4-1 lead.
Trailing by three runs in the top of the seventh, Coppin got three runs on three hits.
Devyan Dyal started the rally with a single and following another single by
Caleb Duhay and a walk issued to
Corey Treyes, the bases were loaded with no outs.
Nazier McIlwain then went opposite field for a two-run double to cut the lead to 4-3.
With two runners on with two outs,
Marcos Castillo drew a walk to load the bases and
Allen Saar was credited with an RBI on another base on balls. After a pitching change, the Mountaineers were able to retire the side.
Relief pitcher
Bradley Tuttle fanned the first two batters of the seventh inning and with the bases loaded, umpires called for a thirty minute delay due to lightning. After thirty minutes, the game was called due to inclement weather. Since the Mount was batting and Coppin State had already batted, the game does not revert back to the previous inning. This means that the game ends in a 4-4 tie in seven innings.
Thomas, Castillo and Dyal both had multi-hit games to lead the Eagles offensively while Castillo also drew a walk.
Devin Rivera Ozuna got the start on the mound and allowed four runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings of work. Tuttle struck out three in 1.1 innings while allowing just a hit and a walk.
The Eagles are scheduled to return to the field for its home opener on Feb. 24-25 against Wagner.
