Women’s Hoops Bested on the Road by #9 Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Coppin State's women's basketball team battled hard but dropped its second-straight game to a ranked opponent, falling 93-36 at 9th-ranked Maryland on Friday night at Xfinity Center.

How It Happened
First Quarter
  • The Eagles held their own early on with a fastbreak layup by E'Mya Price as Brooke Fields found her to break the press.
  • Chance Graham then hit a jumper from the corner to tie the game at four.
  • Maryland scored ten-straight points before Fields found Price once again for a layup followed by another driving bucket by Kaiya Coleman, cutting the deficit to 14-8 with 6:31 to go.
  • Following a Terps jumper, Jalynda Salley got on the board with a layup off a dime by Fields.
  • It was all Maryland after that as the Terrapins closed the period on a 15-3 run to lead 31-13 with the only Eagles output coming on a three by Graham.
 
 
Second Quarter
  • Price went on a roll for Coppin as she hit a pair of three's to finish with ten points on 4-of-4 shooting for the half.
  • The Eagles were outscored in the period, 17-7 with Graham tacking on a free throw.
  • Both teams struggled from the floor with the Navy & Gold playing tough defense, holding Maryland to 28.6% shooting.
  • The Terrapins with their superior size outrebounded CSU, 36-18 with 20 offensive rebounds leading to 15 second-chance points and a 48-20 halftime lead.
 
Third Quarter
  • Graham came out hot after the intermission, grabbing an offensive rebound and putting it back for the bucket.
  • After eight straight Maryland points, Fields also drove in for a bucket to make the score 56-24 in favor of Maryland with 7:28 remaining. 
  • Salley closed out the half with a pair of jumpers from inside the paint, including one off a sweet pass by Maraiyah Smith.
  • Maryland held a 72-32 lead after three quarters of play.
 
Fourth Quarter
  • The relentless Maryland defense and attack really started to show its toll in the final period as a 7-0 Terrapins run to start the quarter forced a Coppin timeout.
  • The Terrapins outscored CSU, 93-36.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • E'Mya Price reached double figures for the first time in just her second career game, scoring 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting along with a couple of 3-pointers.
  • Chance Graham finished a point shy of a double-double with nine points and a team-high 13 rebounds.
  • Jalynda Salley added six points and four rebounds with a pair of blocked shots while making her first career start.
  • Maraiyah Smith and Kaiya Coleman chipped in with four points apiece.
  • Maryland had four players in double figures, led by Taylor Mikesell with 18 points.  Stephanie Jones (17 points, 12 rebounds) and Shakira Austin (12 points, 21 rebounds) both notched double-doubles
  • The Terrapins outrebounded Coppin, 71-39, leading to 28 second-chance points.
 
Who's Next?
  • Coppin State will be in the friendly confines of PEC Arena when its hosts local rival UMBC on Wednesday, November 14.  With several local elementary schools expected to be in attendance, tipoff is slated for 11:00 am.
