Men’s Hoops is No Match for #4 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Coppin State's men's basketball team was no match for fourth-ranked Virginia as the Cavaliers rolled to a 97-40 win on Friday night at John Paul Jones Arena.

How It Happened:
First Half
  • It was an inauspicious start for the Eagles as they quickly fell behind, 7-0, but Coppin fought back with a three by Lamar Morgan followed by a Dejuan Clayton layup to cut the deficit to 7-5 with 17:32 left in the period.
  • Virginia ran away with the game from then on as the Cavaliers scored 14 unanswered points, holding CSU scoreless for nearly seven minutes before Morgan buried a deep three in the face of a UVA defender.
  • Following a Virginia layup, Cedric Council answered with a dunk as him and Chad Andrews-Fulton played a well-executed high-low game.
  • The teams continued to trade points before Virginia extended the lead once again, closing the half on a 17-2 run and taking a 45-17 advantage into the half.
  • CSU shot just 25.9% for the half while Virginia shot a whopping 60.7%. Nine Coppin turnovers also led to 13 Cavaliers points.
Second Half
  • Virginia's Ty Jerome and Coppin's Ibn Williams traded 3-pointers to start the half but the Cavaliers ran off 15-straight points before Kent Auslander drove the lane for a layup with 14:06 remaining.
  • Both teams started to clear the bench as Virginia continued to increase its lead the final buzzer.
  • Coppin shot much better in the second half (40.0%) but the Cavaliers continued its hot shooting at 60% from the field for the period.
Inside the Numbers
  • Ten players scored points for the Eagles, led by Lamar Morgan and Ibn Williams with six points apiece. 
  • Chad Andrews-Fulton and Brendan Medley-Bacon had four rebounds each to lead the team while Andrews-Fulton was also credited with a team-high four assists.
  • De'Andre Hunter scored a game-high 20 points for Virginia while Mamadi Diakite and Ty Jerome finished with 18 and 11 points, respectively.
  • Virginia made 15-of-25 (60%) from behind-the-arc and 12-of-15 from the line while CSU made 6-of-24 three-pointers and did not attempt a shot from the stripe.
