Dayton Flies Past Men’s Hoops, 76-46

DAYTON, Ohio – Coppin State's men's basketball team was unable to contain the University of Dayton as it fell, 76-46, on Saturday night at UD Arena.

The Basics

How It Happened:
First Half
  • The game started of promising for Coppin State as Nigel Marshall hit a three just a minute in, but it was all Dayton from there as the Flyers responded with a 12-0 run.
  • Chad Andrews-Fulton stopped the bleeding momentarily with a jumper but at the midway point of the period, the Flyers extended a 24-12 lead to 25 points with a 13-0 run that lasted nearly six minutes.
  • Coppin closed out the half strong with a three by Dejuan Clayton and a jumper by Cedric Council but Dayton went into the break with a 41-18 lead.
  • The Eagles shot just 25.0% from the floor in the half compared to 48.4% for the Flyers.  Coppin also committed 14 turnovers in the first 20 minutes
Second Half
  • Dayton did not let up as it started the second half with a 7-0 run before a pair of baskets by Clayton.
  • Clayton scored nine of CSU's first 11 points with Giir Ring hitting a pair of free throws for the other two which was his first career points.
  • The Flyers then went another 12-0 run spanning over five minutes before another three by Clayton and a layup by Council to make the score 64-31 with just under eight minutes left.
  • The teams traded baskets for the next six minutes before Coppin closed out the final 1:52 on an 8-0 run.  Justin Steers accounted for five of the final eight points
Inside the Numbers
  • Dejuan Clayton led the Eagles with 13 points on 5-of-13 shooting with a pair of three's.
  • Freshmen Justin Steers and Ibn Williams added eight points apiece.
  • Lamar Morgan and Chad Andrews-Fulton both grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Eagles who were outshot, 49.2% to 29.6%.
  • 21 Coppin turnovers led to 23 Flyers points.
  • Three Flyers finished in double figures including Obi Toppin who had 19 points. Ryan Mikesell notched a double-double with 18 points and ten rebounds.
