NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's
Lamar Morgan and
Dejuan Clayton were named to the 2018-19 Men's Basketball Preseason All-MEAC Team, it was announced by the league office on Thursday morning. Morgan was named to the Second Team while Clayton earned Third Team recognition.
Additionally, the Eagles were also picked to finish ninth of 12 team in the Preseason Poll as voted on by the conference's head coaches and sports information directors. Finishing behind Coppin in the poll were South Carolina State, Maryland Eastern Shore and Delaware State.
Bethune-Cookman was voted as the preseason favorite, followed by North Carolina Central, Norfolk State, Howard and North Carolina A&T. Sitting just ahead of CSU in the poll was Morgan State, Florida A&M and Savannah State.
A senior wing from Willingboro, N.J., Morgan was a Third Team All-MEAC selection last season after leading the team with 15.7 points per game in conference play along with 5.3 rebounds. Morgan proved to be one of the most prolific shooters in the Nation, sinking 88 3-pointers on the year and 37.0% of his three's. In conference action, Morgan made 42.6% of his shots from behind-the-arc.
Morgan's coming out party last season came in a loss at Connecticut when he went off for a career-high 30 points with seven 3-pointers. He later matched that effort with another 30 points with eight 3-pointers against Hampton.
A redshirt sophomore from Bowie, Md., Clayton is earning Third Team Preseason All-MEAC honors for the second-straight season. Clayton led the team in scoring through the first five games last year which included a 20-point effort at Cleveland State before going down with a season-ending injury.
Receiving All-Rookie Team honors in 2016-17, Clayton recorded 12.4 points and a team-high 3.1 assists per contest as a freshman. Clayton reached the 20-point plateau seven times which included a career-high 28-points in a win at Howard.
The Eagles open their 2018-19 season on Tuesday, November 6 at Wisconsin with tipoff scheduled for 8 pm. Coppin's home opener is slated for Monday, December 3 against UMBC at 7 pm.
