Eagles Fall To Wildcats, 3-0

BALTIMORE, Md. – CSU struggled with mistakes all evening long on Friday as Bethune-Cookman capitalized for a MEAC crossover sweep.

How It Happened

First Set
  • Five kills by Miajavon Coleman and three by Lauryn Harrell buoyed the Eagles as it held its own, tied at 13.
  • Both teams would make runs, with B-CU sprinting ahead on a 5-0 run, before CSU answered the call with a 4-0 surge.
  • The Wildcats answered the Coppin charge with a 5-1 response, then the Eagles pulled within two once again with a 3-0 push.
  • A kill by Jordan Jefferson and an ace from J'Nai Higgins ended the wild first set with Cookman taking the set, 25-21.
Second Set
  • B-CU enjoyed a fast start to the second set, building a four-point cushion at 11-7.
  • Coppin would make a game of it, inching its way to within three, 15-12.
  • A 7-1 Cookman run would blow this one open, as the Wildcats ended the second set outscoring the Lady Eagles 10-3 and took control at 25-15.
Third Set
  • Coppin would take its first lead since early in the second set, when it started the third winning 9-7.
  • The wheels fell off from there for the Eagles, as Bethune put the game to bed, rattling off eighteen of the next twenty-three points to clinch a 25-14 set victory and match sweep.
Inside the Numbers
  • The Lady Eagles fought errors all night long, barely outnumbering its kills (29) to attack errors (28).
  • Coleman kept her hot stretch going, notching a double-digit kill total for the twelfth time in her previous fourteen appearances.
  • Brianna Lang continued to produce stellar results, racking up 24 assists and 11 digs to obtain her third double-double in the last four matches.
  • Macy Havill had a breakthrough performance for the Lady Eagles, doubling her kill totals for the season and finishing second on the team with six kills.
  • Bethune-Cookman had an eye-popping 17 blocks for the match, with Faith Landreneaux, Kortney Curtis, and Skyla Whitaker all sharing the wealth with six blocks apiece.
  • Curtis and J'Nai Higgins both tallied ten or more assists, Shayla Eugene paced the Wildcats in digs (12), and Sterling Williamson led B-CU in kills (13).

  • Coppin State will return to the court on October 26 as it looks for the season sweep of Norfolk State. on Senior Night. First serve will be 7 p.m. inside the Physical Education Complex Arena.
