Princess Anne, MD - Coppin Volleyball (0-14) played their most thrilling match this season against UNC Asheville (4-7), but lost in five sets 3-2 (14-25, 30-32, 25-16, 25-19, 6-15). The Lady Eagles were led by
Bailee Jackson (18 kills, 4 assists, 17 digs) and
Asia Stennis (11 kills, 3 blocks, 3 assists, 13 digs).
Angel Jamerson set a season and career high with 41 assists for the match.
Glorines Rosado was named to the second team of the Henson Invite.
UNC Asheville dominated the first set and easily took it 25-14. The second set, Coppin made it very difficult for UNC Asheville. Coppin started down 5-3 but came back to take an 8-5 lead which included a kill by
Christa Johnson from Jamerson. UNC Asheville would bounce back and take the lead, but Coppin would tie the score at 14 after multiple kills from Jackson from Jamerson. Coppin would then take a 20-19 lead after an Elanna Nellis kill, UNC Asheville jumped back and would then take a 22-20 lead. The Lady Eagles wouldn't quit as they would tie the set at every point between 22 thru 30. UNC would eventually score the 31st and 32nd points to win the set.
Down 2-0, Coppin would use the momentum from the second set to take a 12-5 lead to start the third set. The Lady Eagles increased the lead to 14-6 after a
Valiyah Barnes kill. Coppin would score the last two points of the set and secure the set win after kills from Stennis and Jackson from Jamerson. The Lady Eagles would take a 13-7 lead in the fourth set. Coppin would continue to dominate and increase the lead 21-13 after a Rosado service ace. The Lady Eagles would win the set and force a fifth set by scoring the last two points of the set.
UNC Asheville would regain the momentum in the fifth a final set a take a commanding 6-1 lead. The cushion would prove to be too large as UNC Asheville would out score the Lady Eagles 9-5 to win the set and match.
Coppin returns to action next Saturday where they travel to face Univ. of Massachusetts Lowell (3-7) at 6pm.
