Softball Drops Pair to George Washington

BALTIMORE, Md. – Coppin State softball suffered a doubleheader sweep by George Washington on Wednesday, April 5th at the CSU Softball Field. GW won game one 12-3 and then game two 6-5.
 
The Coppin State defense registered 24 combined putouts, 16 assists and turned two double plays against the Colonials which were all season-highs. The Eagles battle with the Colonials in game two was their first extra inning game of the season ending in eight innings.
 
George Washington dominated the first game with 18 hits. GW scored two runs in the first, two in the second inning, five runs in the third, one in the fourth inning and two in the seventh inning for a 12-3 victory.
 
Sophomore Madison Didion (3-15) went 3.0 innings striking out two batters and walking one. Freshman Shelby Spaziani closed the game pitching 4.0 innings. Cayla Brown went 4-for-4 recording a career-high four hits in game one.
 
In the third inning, Coppin State had three consecutive hits leading to a couple of runs scored. Brown singled to center field, then sophomore Hatika James singled to right field and freshman Patricia Soria blasted a 2-RBI single to center field scoring James and freshman pinch runner Arianna Alderete. Alderete scored her third run of the season.
 
The final run came in the fourth inning on an RBI single to right field by Brown allowing sophomore Megan Narvaez to cross home plate. James, Soria and Ullman all finished with two hits in game one.
 
Freshman Cloe' Ochoa tied a season-high with three hits and two RBI in game two for the Eagles. Brown and Ullman produced two hits apiece with Brown also knocking in three RBI.
 
GW scored four runs in the fourth inning that was matched by the Eagles in the bottom of the inning. Then GW scored one run in the fifth which CSU responded with a tying run in the sixth, but the Colonials ended the game in the eighth inning with a home run to down the Eagles 6-5.
 
Nicole Ullman got things going in the fourth inning doubling to left field. The next two Eagles batters drew walks and then Ochoa scored Alderete off of a single to the pitcher. Brown was next and doubled to right center for 3-RBI bringing in Ochoa, Narvaez and Didio.
 
Ochoa tied the game in the sixth inning at 5-5 with a single to left field scoring Ullman who led the inning off singling to left field.
 
The Eagles pitching crew led by starter sophomore Dakota Gartrell and Shelby Spaziani did a great job. Gartrell went 4.0 innings fanning two batters and walking one. Spaziani also went 4.0 innings striking out one batter for Coppin State.
 
Coppin State's softball team travel to Howard University this weekend for a three game MEAC series beginning on Saturday, April 8th in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. and a single game slated for 12 p.m. on Sunday, April 9th.
