Softball Punches Post Season Ticket with 11-7 Victory Against Morgan State

BALTIMORE, Md. – Coppin State softball drew a season-high 11 walks in an 11-7 victory over rival Morgan State University on Sunday, April 30th at the CSU Softball Field. With the win in their regular season finale the Eagles move to 7-11 in the conference and will compete at the 2017 MEAC Softball Championships.

Sophomore pitcher Madison Didion faced a season-high 36 batters in 6.2 innings worth of work. She fanned six batters while walking a season-high five batters.

Junior Nicole Ullman tied a season-best with two hits and two walks leading the Eagles at the plate. Freshman Haley Bravo also had two hits with two runs scored. Freshman Patricia Soria had a season-high three runs scored and tied a season-best drawing two walks. Junior Camille Ochoa scored a pair of runs and sophomore Megan Narvaez had two RBI drawing two walks. Freshman Kimberly Evans also had two RBI. Freshman Shelby Spaziani belted in her second RBI of the season. Sophomore Cayla Brown was walked three times

In the second inning, Soria drew a walk to leadoff and then scored on a passes ball. Morgan State tied it up in the third inning at 1-1 but the Eagles quickly regained the lead on a hit and a fielding error in the bottom of the third.

Sophomore Dakota Gartrell singled, Soria reached on an error and then Ullman was walked to load the bases. Ca. Ochoa was hit by a pitch that scored pinch runner freshman Isabella Didio. Spaziani was walked with the bases loaded with Soria scoring followed by a hit by pitch by sophomore Hatika James that brought in Ca. Ochoa. The final run came on a bases loaded walk by Narvaez scoring Ca. Ochoa.

Morgan State trailed Coppin State 5-1 after the third inning. The Bears tacked on two runs in the fifth with the Eagles responding with a quick run in the bottom of the inning. Bravo singled and then scored on an RBI double to left field by freshman Cloe' Ochoa.

Both teams combined for nine run in the sixth inning alone. Morgan State came up with four hits leading to four runs in the top of the inning and then the Eagles sealed their win with five runs on two hits in the bottom half.

Soria drew a walk and then stole second base. Ullman walked and then Bravo RBI singled scoring Soria. A fielding error by the Bears allowed freshman Camille Nowak and Ca. Ochoa to score. Narvaez followed with an RBI double to right field scoring Bravo. The Eagles final run came on a passes ball sending James home for the fifth run of the inning.

Didion and the Eagles defense breezed through the seventh inning as Coppin State punched their ticket to the 2017 MEAC Softball Championships winning their regular season finale 11-7 over rival Morgan State.
