BALTIMORE, Md. – Coppin State softball defeated Morgan State 6-2 in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday, April 29
th at the CSU Softball Field. Morgan State came up with a split winning game two, 4-3 over the Eagles.
Sophomore pitcher
Madison Didion tied a season-high with eight strikeouts for the complete game win in game one of a doubleheader against Morgan State. At the plate, sophomore
Megan Narvaez was perfect with three hits in three plate appearances.
The Eagles took a 5-1 lead after the second inning on three hits and a fielding error by the Bears. Freshman
Haley Bravo and junior
Camille Ochoa drew walks to get on base. Red-shirt sophomore
Nicole Ullman RBI doubled to left center scoring Bravo. Ochoa scored on a bases loaded walk followed by a two-RBI double to center by
Megan Narvaez. Then, freshman
Cloe' Ochoa RBI doubled to center field allowing Narvaez to score for the Eagles.
Morgan State scored a run in the sixth inning that produced little to no damage. Narvaez led Coppin State with a single to left field and a crossed home plate on a RBI fielder's choice by sophomore
Dakota Gartrell at the bottom of the inning. Didion and the Eagles defense got through the seventh inning securing their seventh conference win of the season, 6-2 over Morgan State.
Megan Narvaez went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI and runs scored and
Nicole Ullman had her fourth double of the season.
In the later game of the double header Morgan State came up with four late runs in the seventh inning to down Coppin State.
The Eagles struck first scoring in the third inning. Ullman drew a walk to leadoff and then freshman
Arianna Alderete pinch ran and stole a base.
Cloe' Ochoa blasted a two-RBI single to right field scoring both Alderete and Narvaez who walked. Sophomore
Cayla Brown reached on a throwing error that brought in Ochoa for the third run of the inning.
With the lead, Narvaez singled up the middle for the only hit of the fifth inning. In the next inning CSU pounded out three hits but eventually left all three runners on base leaving hope for the visiting Bears. Brown singled through the right side, followed by a single through the right side by Gartrell. Freshman
Patricia Soria singled to the pitcher loading the bases full of Eagles but a pair of fielder choices and a line out ended the CSU rally.
Morgan State came from behind with three hits to go along with two fielding errors by Coppin State jumping out to a 4-3 lead in the top of the seventh inning.
Didion went 7.0 innings again fanning three and walking only one on the mound. The Eagles outhit the Bears 7-6 in game two.
On Sunday, April 29
th the teams will play the third game of their weekend series at noon from the CSU Softball Field. The Eagles are currently sitting in fourth place in the MEAC Northern Division with a 7-11 record. Coppin State punches their ticket to the MEAC Softball Tournament with a win over rival Morgan State in the regular season finale.
