BALTIMORE, Md. – Coppin State softball split a doubleheader with Norfolk State University on Thursday, April 27
th at the CSU Softball Field. The Eagles won game one 5-4 while the Spartans took game two 5-4.
Coppin State moves to an 8-39 overall record with a 6-10 MEAC record.
Sophomore catcher
Nicole Ullman hit a walk-off homer to left field in the bottom of the seventh inning capping a 5-4 win over Norfolk State in the early game. That was Ullman's first home run of the season.
Coppin State trailed the Spartans 1-0 after the top of the first inning. Sophomore
Megan Narvaez led off the bottom of the first inning with her second home run of the season a solo shot to right field tying that game at 1-1.
In the third inning, CSU scored two runs on two hits creeping out to a 3-1 advantage. Sophomore
Hatika James drew a walk and then went to third on a single to center field by Narvaez. Then freshman
Cloe' Ochoa doubled to center field for a pair of RBI scoring both James and Narvaez. Ochoa crossed home on a sacrifice fly ball by sophomore
Dakota Gartrell to center field.
Cl. Ochoa doubled to center field in the fifth inning and scored after a sacrifice fly ball to left field by sophomore
Cayla Brown. Norfolk State came up with three runs in the sixth inning to tie the game up at 4-4.
With the game tied in the bottom of the seventh inning
Nicole Ullman blasted a homerun to left field lifting the Eagles to a 5-4 win in game one of the doubleheader.
Sophomore pitcher
Madison Didion (8-19) went 7.0 innings striking out five batters and walking two. Norfolk State finished with seven hits matching CSU's seven hits.
The Eagles had a team season-best two home runs and a pair of sacrifice flies against the Spartans. Freshman
Cloe' Ochoa tallied a team season-high two doubles while
Nicole Ullman recorded her first home run of the season.
Megan Narvaez hit her second home run of the season. Ochoa finished with a season-high four total bases and also tied a season-best with two RBI.
In the later game the Spartans led 3-0 after runs in the first and second innings. Coppin State came up with five hit in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game at 3-3.
Cloe' Ochoa singled to left field and then advanced to third on a double to center field by
Cayla Brown. Sophomore
Madison Didion recorded her first career hit and RBI with a single to left field scoring Ochoa. Freshman
Patricia Soria RBI singled to center field scoring Brown and then freshman
Haley Bravo singled to left field scoring Didion (3-3).
The Spartans reclaimed the lead with two hits leading to two runs in the fifth inning (5-3).
Trailing Norfolk State by two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Narvaez led off with a double to center field.
Dakota Gartrell drew a walk and then Soria RBI singled to right field scoring Narvaez. The Spartans escaped a bases loaded situation and downed the Eagles 5-4 winning game two.
Patricia Soria had a team-high three hits with two RBI.
The Eagles will host Morgan State Bears for a three game weekend series beginning on Saturday, April 29
th at the CSU Softball field.
