BALTIMORE, Md. – Sophomore
Dakota Gartrell set a new career-high with three RBI leading Coppin State to a 12-9 victory over Saint Peter's on Wednesday, April 19
th at the CSU Softball Field. The Eagles won game one but lost game two 7-4.
In game one Coppin State recorded a team season-high 12 runs, tying a season-high with 14 hits and three doubles.
The Peacocks scored two quick runs in the top of the first inning. The Eagles matched Saint Peter's with a pair of runs on two hits and a fielding error in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore
Megan Narvaez took first on a catcher's interference, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman
Cloe' Ochoa and then to third on a single by sophomore
Cayla Brown.
Then sophomore
Dakota Gartrell doubled to left center scoring both Narvaez and Brown tying the game at 2-2. Coppin State rolled into the second inning and took a 3-2 lead on a pair of hits and an error by Saint Peter's. Junior
Camille Ochoa led off with a single to left field and later scored on a single down the left field line by Narvaez.
Coppin State recorded a season-high seven runs in the third inning jumping out to a 10-2 advantage. Gartrell walked to lead off and then freshman
Patricia Soria singled to right center. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore
Nicole Ullman. Freshman
Haley Bravo her second double of the season with a shot to left center scoring both Soria and Gartrell.
On the next play, Bravo crossed home on an error by the defense with sophomore
Hatika James at the plate. Narvaez RBI singled to center field brining in James who scored on an interference ruling on the infield.
Cayla Brown smacked a two-RBI double to center field scoring Narvaez and Ochoa. The final run came on a single to left field by Brown by Gartrell.
Saint Peter's went into the fourth inning trailing Coppin State by eight runs. The Peacocks used a pair of runs on four hits to cut into the lead (10-4). Three more runs were added in the fifth inning making it a 10-7 game.
Coppin State received some cushion with two runs on four hits and one fielding error in the sixth inning. Gartrell had her third hit of the afternoon with a single to the outfield. Ullman singled to right field and advanced to second on an error by the outfield.
Camille Ochoa RBI singled to left field scoring Alderete who pinch ran. Finally, James RBI singled to right field in her final at bat bringing in Ullman for the unearned run.
Relief pitcher
Shelby Spaziani earned her first save of the season tossing the final 2.2 innings striking out one and walking none. Starter
Madison Didion (6-16) retired five batters with strikeouts in 4.1 innings walking one.
Dakota Gartrell led the Eagles at the plate with a perfect 3-for-3 performance. Gartrell had a career-high three hits, scored one run, drew a walk and recorded a double against the Peacocks.
Megan Narvaez had two hits, two runs and two RBI.
Cayla Brown finished with two hits, two RBI and two runs scored.
Camille Ochoa also had a season-high two hits with her fifth RBI of the season and a run scored.
Hatika James brought in two RBI and scored a run with a stolen base.
Saint Peter's had two hits in the first inning of game two leading to a 1-0 advantage. The Eagles came up with two hits in the bottom of the inning.
Megan Narvaez singled up the middle and
Dakota Gartrell singled to center field. The Peacocks tacked on their second run in the third inning on three hits.
The Eagles responded with four hits and their first two runs in the bottom of the third. Narvaez doubled to left center followed by an RBI double to right center by Cl. Ochoa scoring Narvaez. Then, Gartrell RBI singled up the middle returning the favor and bringing in Ochoa. Soria was next and doubled to center field for their last action of the inning.
The Peacocks scored a run in the fifth on two hits, but the Eagles were alert and tied it back up in the bottom portion of the fifth. Brown singled to center field and then Alderete pinch ran for her. Soria's RBI single up the middle scored Alderete tying the action at 3-3.
In the sixth inning, Saint Peter's regained the lead with four run on three hits and one error by CSU. The Eagles managed to trim the deficit with a run by James in the sixth on a bases loaded walk. Coppin came up with one hit in the seventh inning which was not enough as Saint Peter's held on for a 7-4 win in game two.
Cloe' Ochoa (0-4) pitched 5.2 innings striking out two and
Madison Didion went the final inning also striking out two.

Dakota Gartrell all had two hits each to lead the Eagles batting.
Coppin State heads to Hampton, VA for a MEAC weekend series against the Hampton Pirates. The teams will play a doubleheader on Friday, April 21
st at 11 am and 1 pm and will conclude with a single game Saturday morning at 11:00 am.
