WASHINGTON, D.C. – Junior
John Bonanca had three RBI in a mid-week matchup at George Washington University on Tuesday, April 18
th at Tucker Field. GW defeated the Eagles 20-7 collecting 22 hits. Coppin State falls to an 8-23 overall record.
George Washington came up with seven runs on six hits in the first inning against the Eagles. Coppin State managed to score an early run on two hits in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore
Jamar Criss led off with a single up the middle and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Senior
Bryant Miranda followed with a single to shortstop. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch which led to Criss scoring on an RBI groundout by
John Bonanca.
In the third inning, freshman
Cole Gerula singled to left field and then sophomore
Nazier McIlwain singled up the middle moved him to second on a single up the middle. The runners both advanced on a wild pitch and Criss RBI grounded out scoring Gerula for the lone run of the inning. George Washington responded with two runs in the bottom of the third extending their lead to 9-2.
Sophomore
Malik White singled up the middle for the only hit of the fourth inning and in the next inning, the Eagles trimmed the deficit with another run in the fifth.
Criss had his second hit with a single to shortstop and Miranda was next with a single to left field. Bonanca brought in Criss on a single up the middle for the Eagles third run of the evening.
The seventh inning was Coppin's best outing with four hits turning into three runs. Freshman
Allen Saar led off with an infield single and moved to second on a single through the right side by freshman
Isaiah Wilson. McIlwain doubled down the right field line for an RBI scoring Saar. Miranda RBI grounded out in the next play but allowed Wilson to cross home. Bonanca recorded his third RBI of the game with a single up the middle scoring McIlwain.
In the eighth inning trailing George Washington 18-6, CSU's Wilson RBI singled up the middle scoring White for their final run. GW tacked on two runs in the bottom of the eighth to spring ahead 20-7 for the win.
Junior
Caleb Duhay made his first start of the season pitching 2.1 innings striking out one batter. Freshman
Joshua Hancock pitched a season-high 4.0 innings facing 20 batters leading the Eagles while freshman
Anthony Martinez seen some action and Bonanca went the final 1.1 innings.
Bonanca tied a season-high with three RBI and Wilson had a season-high two hits and his first RBI of his career. McIlwain had the Eagles only double finishing with two hits along with Criss and Miranda.
Coppin State returns to action on Wednesday, April 19
th at Bachman Park in Glen Burnie, MD hosting Mount St. Mary's at 3 p.m.
