HANOVER, Md. – Junior
John Bonanca paced the Eagles with a pair of hits and three RBI in an 8-3 conference victory against Delaware State on Friday, April 14, 2017 at Joe Cannon Stadium. The Eagles improve to 8-20 overall and 6-7 in the MEAC.
Junior
John Bonanca went 2-for-4 at the plate tying a season-best with two hits and recorded a season-high three RBI. Senior
Clinton Arnold tied a career-high with two runs scored while also recording a pair of hits. Junior
Brett Helmbrecht also had two hits and had his third double of the season with two runs scored. Sophomore
Nazier McIlwain had two hits, an RBI and one run scored.
Sophomore starting pitcher
Krystian Negron went 5.0 innings fanning four batters and walking two. Relief pitcher freshman
Corey Treyes tossed a season-high 4.0 innings, striking out two after facing 14 batters.
Delaware State got off to a quick start with a first inning run on a throwing error by the Eagles defense. CSU came up with their first hit in the bottom of the inning on a single up the middle by McIlwain.
The Eagles came up with three runs in the bottom of the second. Sophomore
Jamar Criss led off singling to right field and then moved to third base on a fielding error by DSU. Helmbrecht RBI doubled down the left field line scoring Criss and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Arnold kept things rolling with an RBI single down the right field line brining in Helmbrecht. Arnold stole second base and got to third on a throwing error by the Hornets. CSU's final run of the third inning came on a single to the shortstop by Bonanca. Arnold was able to beat the throw at the plate for the 3-1 advantage.
Delaware State tied the game up at 3-3 with two runs on three hits in the third inning.
Arnold led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a double to left field. Freshman
Allen Saar singled to second base allowing Arnold to once again beat the throw to home for his second run of the afternoon. In the eighth inning the Eagles blew the game wide open with four runs on three hits.
Senior
Bryant Miranda was walked to lead the inning off followed by a single to right field by McIlwain. Miranda scored on that play as the Hornets defesne committed their fourth error. Later, junior
Andres Santana RBI singled to right center field scoring McIlwain. The momentum was at a high with Bonanca knocking in a pair of runners on a single to center field scoring Duhay and Helmbrecht.
Coppin State finished with 11 hits compared to seven by the Hornets. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 14
th at Joe Cannon Stadium to end the weekend series at 12:00 pm.
