NEWARK, Del. – The Coppin State University softball team was swept by Delaware, 3-2 and 11-3 in a doubleheader on Thursday, March 30
th at the UD Softball Stadium.
Coppin State falls to 3-24 overall record and Delaware improves to 12-13 record.
Sophomore
Cayla Brown had Coppin State's first hit of the game singling to right center field in the first inning. Freshman
Camille Nowak was next and homered to left field for two runs scoring Brown and putting the Eagles up 2-0 over the Blue Hens.
The Eagles had a pair of hits in the fifth inning. Freshman
Patricia Soria led off singling to center field and freshman
Cloe' Ochoa doubled to right center field. Despite runners in scoring position Delaware managed to escape the inning with no Eagles crossing home. The defensive stop by the Hens led to a three run fifth inning that gave them a 3-2 lead.
Delaware came up with four crucial hits in the fifth inning to overtake the Eagles. Starting pitcher
Madison Didion (3-12) was replaced midway through the inning by relief pitcher freshman
Shelby Spaziani. Didion finished with a season-high six strikeouts, one walk and six hits in 4.2 innings. Spaziani struck out one batter in her 1.1 innings of action.
The Eagles finished with four hits with
Camille Nowak leading the way. Nowak went 1-for-3 with her first collegiate home run and season-high two RBIs.
In the later game, Delaware scored four runs in the first inning, one in the second, three in the third, one in the fifth inning and two in the sixth inning for an 11-3 win over Coppin State. Freshman DH
Kimberly Evans carried the Eagles with a season-high two hits including her first double of the season and also scored a run.
Cloe' Ochoa singled to center field followed by
Cayla Brown singling up the middle for the first two hits of the game in the first inning, CSU entered the second inning trailing by four runs but were able to cut the deficit with two hits on two runs.
Patricia Soria led off with a shot down the left field line and advanced to second on a walk by sophomore
Hatika James. Sophomore
Megan Narvaez connected on a two-RBI single to left field scoring both Evans and James making it a 4-2 game.
Evans and freshman Isabella Didio both tallied hits in the fourth inning. Evan singled to right field then Didio singled to left field. CSU's final run came in the fifth inning on a fielding error by Delaware.
Brown singled to center field and advanced to second on a fielding error allowing
Cloe' Ochoa to score. Defensively, Ochoa had a team season-high seven assists against Delaware.
Coppin State will host MEAC foe Delaware State University this weekend for a three game series at the CSU Softball Field. The Eagles and Hornets will play a double header on Saturday, April 1st at 1 p.m. and then a single game on Sunday, April 2nd at noon.
